South Adelaide Vs Port Melbourne in the World Cup

They obviously really rate us. The big drawcard at the MCG again. Undefeated in over 120 years there and never having lost to Port ever should see us start favourites. Probably the biggest crowd ever between the two clubs should see a cracker of a game at the traditional 11:10 start time.

Can't debate any of the above. Also aren't South on a one game winning streak at the MCG? Damn MCC members might have first dibs on tickets though. Will this mean South play one more game than the power at the MCG this year?

Thanks for the laugh Doc ... quite true.

I hope the Panthers will get up but Pt Melbourne as VFL champs (as a stand alone club as well with NO AFL listed playes) are one of the elite state league clubs so this will be almost as big a challenge as playing Central at Elizabeth.

Good luck.

BTW win this and you get Claremont in the semi's

After beating the Bloods reserves by 101 pts in Perth in Rd 1, yesterday they travelled accross the country to the Gold Coast and held Mt Gravatt scoreless for the ENTIRE first half.

In the end it was a 88 point win with Mt Gravatt kicking 2.1 for the whole contest.

Not sure why organisers put the WAFL premiers (Claremont), VFL Premiers (Port Melbourne), Foxtel Cup champions (Williamstown), NEAFL premiers (NT Thunder) and the highest ranked SANFL club (South) all in the same half of the draw.

Could it be that they actually have a draw for these games and not organise the fixtures like the AFL and to some extent the SANFL do?

Could be ... very few knock out comps are that random though. Most ensure their top seeds are spread around.

I would have thought at least you would take the top team from VFL, WAFL, SANFL and NEAFL and put two in each half of the draw.

If South get to the FC GF they would have certainly deserved it.

Also could have drawn them on purpose to tempt the top SANFL sides into competing by taking on quality opposition......

perhaps they should try the NEAFL and Tasmania draw next to make it easier for them

I'd have thought - given the rest of the comp is manufactured - that the fixture is very deliberate.

Precisely
Think that is the aim of the draw, give a minnow a better chance of making it to the final

There may not be a record crowd at this game on Saturday.
In 1978 they played each other in a semi final of the NFL competition - Tues night July 18 1978 in Melbourne - not sure of which ground it was but I remember watching it on tv.
South 9.14 def Port Melb 9.9
South leading goalkickers were Harradine & Ruscuklic 2 each while Port Melb's legendary Fred Cook kicked 5 of their 9.
Port Melb led for most of the night and the game ended on a sour note with a series of spiteful incidents with 2 South players reported in the last minutes - however it turned into a schemozzle when the NFL could not arrange for the VFA commissioners to hear the charges and so the charges got dropped.
So this Saturday might not set a new record crowd for these 2 teams - as we don't know what the crowd figure was back in 1978!!

Lake Oval possibly? That was used for a VFL night series during the 60's for the teams that didn't make the finals.....

Would be interesting to know the venue as 1978 was right in the middle of the NFL v VFL fight. was it definately VFL Park????? Did the VFL actually allow a game on its 'sacred' soil???? I dont think any VFA grounds had lights though.

Two very historic clubs against each other... a shame they cant play it at Port Melourne or an Adelaide ground for atmosphere....

anyway hopefully someone will be there and neither side will play their reserves

I saw the game on tv that night - definitely wasn't Waverley - I think it was the South Melb oval - Lake Oval?
Where's the South historian when we need him?

The 1978 Ardath Cup game between Central Districts and Dangenong was played at Lakeside Oval, maybe the others were too?

That is very interesting as relations between the VFL & VFA were fragile at that time as the VFL sought to kill the VFA off by moving to Sunday football. Im shocked that they let South Melbourne be used at all.

I am told by a reliable source that the SANFL, through Don Roach, and the VFA were the only ones who dared stand up to the VFL and their attempt to take over the game in NFL meetings. Ultimately they lost, the VFA is long dead and the SANFL is a defacto reserves competition: but IMO they were right in hindsight.

RIP: Dandenong, Oakleigh, Yarraville, Brunswick, Prahran, Northcote, Sunshine, Camberwell, Waverley and the many more who died trying to keep up.
