Lost interest after the VFL I mean AFL changed the rules so Carey wasn't eligible to play for SA anymore and created the Allies which meant nothing to players and killed the concept.

But very few know what would happen with South supporters on GF day.

I think a lot of people from South Australia feel the same way and it's a large chip on the shoulder that in hind sight we probably should all get over especially after almost 20 years. There was also alot of other things that happened around the same time that occured and that fuelled the fire.
The beauty of South Australia is that we are not intimidated by anyone and we could have a footy team with the tallent of Callington and Victoria could have the Brisbane Lions 2001-2003 lining up and we'd be screaming out for a shot @ the title.
The end of the day it is good for the game and the raw emotion promotes the game in SA.

It should stay canned.
The last thing I want is to see Jonathon Brown running out for Victoria and getting his face smashed in again
Particularly if it was by Jack Redden playing for SA!

Bwahaha. True.
But they have to train. They don't have to play SOO.

It would be a 15/20 goal margin. WA would get a little closer.

Just watching the NRL State of Origin and as always its passionate as ever! Great to watch!!!!

What makes the NRL version work while the AFL's cant, both sports are equally as bruising.

Is it the NRL only has two states competiting where in the AFL you would have SA, VIC, WA all wanting a slice of the action?

Because the Australian side is picked from SOO.
Very prestigious to earn a Kangaroos jersey and go on tour and play world cups etc.
What does the AFL have? A 2 week junket to Ireland every couple of years.

The history behind it.

They uses to play State v State (similar to how the SANFL/WAFL game is), as it didn't matter where you were from if you played in Sydney, you played for New South Wales.

Artie Beetson is the best example, he played for New South Wales against Queensland despite being a proud Queenslander.

When the NRL started really pilfering the Queenslanders in the late 70's, the call went out to make the State v State games as Origin.

Artie was at the end of his career, in 1980 he got the chance to lead Queensland in the first ever State of Origin game, which they won 20 - 10. They then played another state v state (residency) game which he also represented Queensland in as by then he was back at Redcliffe.

Artie went apeshit in the first game, and smashed as many New South Welshmen as he could, and the legend of Origin was up and about!

Artie then coached the Queenslanders until 84, and by then the legendary run of Origins had started. I don't know a hell of a lot about New South Wales but Queensland were blessed as they had some of the biggest names come through and play origin, and they still do. Names like Beetson, Lewis, Mininga, Langer, Vautin, Tallis, Lockyear, Thrustans, Slater, Cronk etc....

The Queenslanders also have a network set up for past Origin blokes, who support the current team, and help out etc.

A couple of interesting articles in the last few days.

http://www.afl.com.au/tabid/208/default.aspx?newsid=138081

THE AFL Players' Association has officially told the AFL it wants a representative match during next year's pre-season.

AFLPA CEO Matt Finnis met with AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson on Thursday to put forward the proposal.

Poll reveals players want State of Origin

The AFLPA has officially requested that a weekend be set aside for a representative game, beginning in 2013.

It is believed the AFLPA has strongly endorsed an 'All-Star' concept ahead of the traditional State of Origin format, as it believes the latter causes too many logistical problems.

Under many proposals expressed to the AFL from Finnis, shortening the NAB Cup from four weeks to three is the preferred option.

The representative game would be held in the fourth week.

The AFLPA confirmed the meeting took place and that several options relating to the All-Star game were being "talked through".

Under such a proposal, the pre-season format would look like this:

Weeks 1-3: Traditional NAB Cup

Week 4: All-Star weekend and NAB Cup Challenge matches

Week 5: Rest week for all clubs

Week 6: 2013 Premiership season - round one

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/138145/default.aspx

AFL GREAT Leigh Matthews and Sydney Swans coach John Longmire have poured cold water on the players' proposal to introduce an all-star game on the eve of the season.

The AFL Players Association presented a submission to the AFL proposing to shorten the NAB Cup fixture and introduce an all-star game to be played a fortnight before round one.

Speaking on Access All Areas on AFL.com.au, Matthews said the concept might work in its first year because the players would be excited about playing with their contemporaries from rival clubs.

"But I tell you what, in the second third and fourth years there would be a lot of injuries," Matthews said.

Matthews and Longmire both questioned why players would seek an extra bye and yet push for the introduction of an extra game.

They agreed coaches would not support an all-star game.

Longmire said: "It's a critical time of year.

"You're trying to get all your players, especially your best players, in the right frame of mind and in the right physical condition to start an AFL season."

The all-star concept is to select two captains who then pick one player after another until they've formed a team.

Despite Matthews' misgivings over the concept, he agreed to the promptings of co-host Damian Barrett to choose one player of two presented.

He selected Gary Ablett over Chris Judd and Lance Franklin over Travis Cloke. There were three more selections.
