I think this has been taken right out of context.

What she was saying is that it does happen but be strong and rise above it and prove people wrong .... I think this apples to whether you are a man , woman or whoever you identify yourself with.
Is out of change.....thanks Cambridge Clarrie!!!

Yeah, you're right. She should have just lied about how she handled it and joined Gillard in the sinbin
I'm betting you didn't even read the article

As for clutching at straws - you compare it to "Things that batter" - - you comparing what she said with a bad joke about beating up women?

I did read the article and I'm guessing that from the way she was talking she was probably referring to the old make us a coffee love , what would a woman know etc comments. I was a supervisor in a factory when blokes hung out their old fellas to young girls, showed photos of girls in comprimising situations with their workmates to other blokes in the factory, make life unbearable for them if they wouldn't go out with someone, leave real graphic pron lying about where they could see it. I dont think this sort of thing should be swept under the carpet and it wasn't. A few of the older women heard about it and it was reported. Charges were even laid against 2 blokes.
I guess in judging and comparing certain things we are all guided by our experiences

Isobel Redmond didn't just have to rise above gender prejudice in her career and beat it rather than bleat about it.

On top of that, her first job in Adelaide as a young lawyer was with Duncan, Groom, and Hannon, a very ALP law firm.
So she had another component of potential prejudice to rise above by proving she could do the work.
(I'd met Peter Duncan a few times in social contexts, and went to school with Terry Groom.)

I saw for the first time Isobel Redman in the flesh at the Paradise Interchange this morning. I was quite shocked on how tiny she is. She could have been in Lord of the rings. Does anyone know how old she is I would guess mid 60s ?

Wikipedia wrote:Isobel Mary Redmond (born 8 April 1953) is the current parliamentary leader of the South Australian division of the Liberal Party of Australia and the Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament of South Australia since 2009. The Redmond Liberals won 18 of 47 seats in the South Australian House of Assembly at the 2010 election, a gain of three since the previous election. Redmond has been the member for the electoral district of Heysen in the House of Assembly since 2002.
However that site is not entirely correct in all details.
Both Isobel Redmond and Terry Groom have told me her first job in Adelaide was with Duncan, Groom, and Hannon.

I don't think it is fairly certain that she will win. The Libs continue to make up little ground in SA and offer very little alternative to what was a stale but now less experienced, less arrogant government.
I don't even think her leadership at the next election is fairly certain.

But Status of Women Minister Gail Gago called the comments outrageous. "(Ms) Redmond's comments illustrate the Opposition does not understand the barriers women face in the workplace and suggesting these issues should be ignored is irresponsible," she said.

Good on her

Keep spinning Jimmy this is a terrible gaffe by Redmond.

At this stage, at least one angry woman went to leave in protest but was persuaded to remain by others at her table.

One angry woman wanted to leave
I've had more than that leave dinners I've paid for.

Not saying I agree with her. But how does that deflate her argument any less?

It doesn't Jimmy's just going into damage control.

Not sure it is an argument DW
I think it's more of a typical vacuous statement from someone who has struggled to be even mediocre in her own job(s)

It would appear that others tend to agree with me that this has been blown all out of proportion: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/ignore-discrimination-isobel-redmond-tells-women/story-e6frea83-1226363603869

JUST ignore it and it will go away. It’s the kind of advice a parent might give an angst-ridden teenager with a humiliatingly large spot on their face.

It’s not how you would expect a modern political leader to answer a question about how to respond to gender discrimination in the year 2012.

Asked on Monday for advice by a woman who said she was experiencing discrimination from older males in her position as a local councillor, state Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond’s comments read like something out of a 1950s manual for good housewives.
