Are the big four biggest crowd pullers back for the AFL?

The MCG have advised that no general admission tickets are available for Saturday nights Dreamtime Blockbuster Essendon & Richmond members only

With Carlton, Collingwood , Essendon and Richmond all up and about the AFL will be rubbing their hands with glee as the cash are registers ringing

Carlton, Collingwood and Richmond supporters always seem to rock up despite ladder positions.
Essendon supporters on the other hand............ (and no, you can't refer to Anzac Day)

Not true. Even in our poor years we still had one of the highest memberships going around and i think you will find our average attendances have been good.
Since 1997 Essendon averages 2nd with over 48,000 just behind Collingwood on just over 50,000.
Richmond average just over 40,000 and Carlton 38,000 and we have had some very ordinary years form wise over that period.

Ha thats rubbish. They turn up to round one and whenever they have won 2 in a row.

They do have a lot of support, but saying they always rock up is drawing a long bow.

Incorrect. We always have good crowds and our supporters do not jump on.

When we are struggling (last 25 years), we still attend, boo and just spit at our players, simple

I've been to every Richmond game I could physically get to in the last ten years, as well as being a member, despite us being puss for most (all) of that period. I'm sure there's plenty of Richmond supporters older than myself who can say the same thing for the last 30 years.

Richmond fans are outstanding with their support. Is like to see once the new stadium in Perth is built because I suspect wce will have the biggest attendances in the land.....

They will get the biggest home attendance average, think its a new 60,000 seater stadium but they still wont get near the big 4 because of their poor drawing poor away. WC still get crowds of 15-20k when they play in Melbourne against the likes of WB, Kangaroos, Melbourne etc.
The Big 4 still draw 40k to their matches against interstate sides aswell as their 6 matches against each other which draw over 60k

The Big Four

Postby Turbo » Fri May 18, 2012 8:29 am

Have heard in Melbourne media that the big 4 (which was a term developed in the 60's or 70's?) no longer includes Richmond. Instead, hawthorn these days gets mentioned with the others.

Also read somewhere that the blues have had the highest overall attendance for 3 out of the past 4 seasons and that is without any 'special' games such as dreamtime or Anzac day. 'Season opener' game may be in this category but was hijacked this year.
Will endeavor to find the stats I read about this.

Local news reports the new Perth stadium will hold 80k. If you have never been to Perth its hard to comprehend how bigger fan base they have. 2 million people and an outstanding economy.

When was the last time anyone drew 30k to a Sydney, port, Brisbane, gold coast or GWS game let alone 40k. Wce,Freo and crows crowds are healthy and everyone gets good crowds there.
Finally to say collingwood fans attend is questionable. In the mid 90's they were in serious strife and Eddie has done a magnificent job to get them where they are now. When times go tough again I'd like to see how they go.....

It's funny that whenever someone mentions the archaic notion of the 'Big Four' they are nearly always standard bearers of the Richmond Tigers. I don't blame the older Tigger fans for indoctrinating their young in such a manner though as these poor bastards have swum through 30 years of shit to get to where they are now...um....outside the eight.

As for the Tiger fans I know just how loyal these mad buggers are. I haven't been to a Richmond game for a very long time. The last time was the 1995 Preliminary Final out at Artic Park against Geelong. We won that game by 13 goals but the yellow and black flags were waving proudly at the end of the game and they were even singing the YELLOW AND BLACK and I was thinking 'um we did win that game right?'. To me the Tiger fans are the most diehard in the competition. If that makes them a 'big four' club then so be it.

regards,

REB
