Selection Policies

Postby HAWKBOY » Fri May 04, 2012 2:38 pm

Wondering what is the general rule for selection at most clubs is if a player decides not to train at all during the season and only play the lower grades. Should he be selected in a clubs B Grade side?

All I know is that it sets a dangerous precedent. I have left a club because of the lack of respect for said policies stated at the start of the season. Should only apply to A grade sides if the club only has 3 teams.

No nothing like that. Anyway Footy Smart has so much pull he will be able to get it sorted out straight away.

We've a few that can't train scattered throughout the club; generally they play in d grade or below according to their standard unless they're an out and out champion.
It also depends on the numbers of players available... :)

Thanks Finn. I just wanted to see what was the "norm" around the clubs.

We've only got two sides, but don't expect to game a game in either side if you never train. Having said that, if the B-Grade is short, you may get a call, although preference goes to blokes who have trained previously and are financial.

This will vary depending on the depth of a club. However you would expect that any club in div 3 or higher would/should have some sort of policy in place where if you don't train at least once a week you don't play a grade.
There are so many things to take into consideration though i.e. work situations, family situations etc. If a bloke is an out and out gun but can't train due to work commitments then I see no problem playing him in the A grade as long as form warrants.
However if it is simply laziness to why they don't train they should not be selected in front of anyone who trains.

The key really is to have the same rules for everyone. It's when rules for some aren't passed on for others is when people start getting narky!

I am the perfect example. Played mostly A grade in previous years but also trained most nights. Couldnt be arsed with training this year and rightly do not get selected for either grade unless we are really short. And fair enough, its the absolute right policy to have.

If a person isn't willing to train at least once a week, then you have to ask yourself:
a) Is he going to be reliable to pay fees?
b) Is he going to be reliable to show up each week?
c) Is he any benefit to the club?
d) Are they they type of person you want around the club, setting an example for younger players?

Dont train, Dont play.... Not Happy, move on...

If a player truly cares about their club or is semi interested/committed to playing footy, they will make the effort to at least train once a week.

Different policies for different people I've noticed. Footy Follower summed it up pretty well. Coaches preach about everyone training all the time, and everyone getting treated the same at the start of a preseason, but if all isn't going to plan (not getting good results) that all goes out the window. Comes down the talent at the end of the day I guess. If you're talented enough you're gonna get picked.

Does that mean if don't have any "tall" forwards only short ones morell. C'mon you do a solid 2 hour session most saturdays.

Jeez, there is nothing solid about my running. I am more of a jogger/shouter than runner.

Always been about efficiencies and minimised running.
