Players ducking the head in tackles

Postby westozfalcon » Mon Apr 23, 2012 10:35 pm

I agree with Alastair Clarkson's obervations after the West Coast v Hawthorn game at the weekend about Eagles players dropping at the knees when about to be tackled so as to receive a free kick for 'too high'.

When a player does this he should be pinged for holding the ball because he is not trying hard enough to make an effective disposal and is basically just angling for a free kick.

No surprise for me as they are as hard as anyone in the AFL. They hunt the ball and play the ball every time. They hunt the ball massively. The shrug of the shoulders that they do they helps bring on frees, well bad luck, its just a good way to earn a free. Nothing wrong with it IMO.

Its more a tactic Joel Selwood uses to his advantage, when the tackle is high on the arm he lifts his arm up to make it slide up to his neck while at the sametime collapsing his body. Tacklers are stuffed, they just have to go lower on him.

Maybe the tacklers could just get stronger and not allow their tackles to be push up around the head

Don't go to low, you may get reported for hitting his legs.

young players are taught this at their later stages in junior footy, so I have no problem just need to get better at tackling

WTF? What young players are ever taught this crap?

Young players are taught the basics. I've never heard a junior coach instruct a kid to "drop your knees when being tackled and lift your arms up, so you get a free kick for a high tackle".

Any coach teaching junior players to lure free kicks for high tackles should get clubbed in the face by a pan-sized schnapper.
