Lots of issues and points to discuss but where to begin  one thing that stuck out from our view of the ruins was Godden throwing all the toys out of the cot re. position changes, really what the hell is the point of Grocke @ fullback when there's another game on Wed. and the hope is he gets a bag for you, why not try and get him a few in garbage time as all forwards need confidence. This maybe the time to question the coaches box; where is the difference, who's got a left field view of things like tactics/motivation, a seasoned veteran perspective looks like a must right now and you dont get that with all the very recent ex players! The club needs to revisit 06 when Fuller had his best year with the serious backing of outsiders Ricky Mcgowan & Luke Norman. Godden has had his bubble burst big time as alot has gone against us ( some luck ) but most of it self-inflicted. As coach the buck ( heat ) will stop with him, but the Board and CEO need to see this situation in light of 04/05 and fix the problem before it drags all the good work of the last two years down, not to mention stall a talented young coach from reaching his potential. Now Mick might not like it but may soon be ready to concede certain facts that are becoming serious as we are nearly going, going, almost gone :o You cant use injuries as an excuse when your getting belted like we are, it's a large number of issues that even one win on ANZAC day or 3 kids from Norwood cant hide anymore.

LOL at Holden ... you want Ronnie back now?

My memory has been failing me lately but weren't you the head of the get rid of Ronnie brigade a couple of years ago?

Then, after last years finals, the Eagles were going to dominate the competition for the next 100 years.

Now you lose the first 4 games of the year and it's all the coaches fault, the one that took you to an unexpected flag last year.

Are you are real supporter of your club or just a bandwagoning sniping opportunist?

One more nail landed in the coffin on Saturday with the loss to North but if we were to drop the game against the Dogs on ANZAC Day I would be prepared to call the season over.

The issue is not injuries or retirements from last season. Only Parry and Powell are the main losses and I still think we would be losing even with them in the side. Eddy is unproven and was in poor form during the trials and first match so not telling whether he’ll be decent at this level. Tiller and Allmond were mostly terrible during last season and only hit decent form towards the end of the year and during finals. Treeby was great a few years ago but injury caught up and his form in the last few years steadily got worse so he was basically finished as a league player.
I don’t think it is necessarily Godden’s gameplan that is bad. We just don’t have the quality of players or depth anymore. Whether or not that is Goddens fault I am not sure. However I am firmly pointing the finger at Godden for not targeting the right areas. Two key questions need to be asked.

Question 1 – why have we not targeted a key forward to assist Grocke?

It is very simple. If you can’t kick goals you don’t win games. Aside from Grocke we do not have anyone capable of taking a mark in the forward line or anyone else that even knows where to run or position themselves. Godden has a lot to answer for in this regard in terms of failing to target a recruit to replace Passador when he retired a few years back. Rather than wasting money on Eddy (who is unlikely to be a 25+ possession recruit anyway) it would have been wiser to throw this money at the best key forward in the VFL, WAFL or whatever. Its not as if this issue has crept up slowly either. Each year for the past few years our average score has been getting smaller and smaller so that we now are unable to kick more than 7 goals a match. What we have been crying out for is a strong bodied marking forward rather than the skinny rangy tall that Godden seems to be introducing. Interesting watching the tv on Sat when ABC showed clips of the last final played against North and footy park a few years back. We had 3 big targets (Passador, Grocke, Salter). On the weekend our targets were Grocke, Rae and Staple. Failure to recruit has meant that Godden has been forced to play Grocke at FF when he plays his best footy as a CHF. Our current forward set-up is not exactly a forward line to strike fear into the opposition.

Question 2 – why do we only target former eagles recruits?

Its great when a former player returns to the club. However the question has to be asked whether they were actually needed or were just targeted because they are former eagles. Did we think Bock had potential before recruiting him? Was Hall going to be the dynamic rover we have been crying out for the last 10 years? Was Sumner going to be the speedy wingman? What role was Shirley going to play? Harding???? It seems to me that our recruiting staff (if we even have them) are not doing due diligence by checking to see whether these players can actually play at the level. If Godden had not actually seen them play then why not?

Unless we see some big improvements I honestly believe that Godden should voluntarily agree to step aside for the State Coaching role. I had my doubts at the start of the year but thought it might be ok as our team would be comfortably winning. The fact we aren’t means he must put every minute of his time into ensuring we start winning again. There should be no distractions that are caused by State team duties. The fact is that every minute he is training the State lads, he is not thinking about what should be his primary focus which is the Eagles. If the young kids are still learning then he should be made to spend extra time with them to teach them....minutes that will be lost if he is coaching the State team.

I reckon North dropped their first 5 in 1992 after the 91 flag, and still somehow ended up with the double chance.
Someone else may like to verify that but I'm pretty confident.

Kyle Smith from FOOT-e TIMES SA wrote:Eagles have now equalled their poorest start to the season with three losses, however when percentage is taken into account is is easily worse than the 0-3 start in 2008.

It is not yet the worst start to the season by the defending champions as seen here:

- West lost first 5 in 1910; missed finals in 5th place

- Glenelg lost first 5 in 1935; only win in 1935 was Round 6 to go from first to last

- North lost first 5 in 1953; missed finals in 5th place

- North lost first 5 in 1992; finished 3rd in minor round and lost both finals

Norwood lost their first four in 2010 and were only seven points from the flag too.

I'm not sure Norwood lost those 4 games by an average of 67 points though ...
