From the article:
"I know we've got Norwood early in the season, but we wanted some other games to draw strong crowds early on, given we're spending $58,000 on re-globing the lights." Central's other home night matches are against Glenelg, which has a traditionally poor travelling supporter base, on May 11, and last season's wooden-spooner, Sturt, on August 25.

I knew they would regret not playing South under lights last year. We must have a better travelling supporter base than I can recall. We might have to take the seven seater this year out to Elizabeth for our regular pantsing.

Has there been anything official from the SANFL explaining why the season begins with a whimper rather than a bang? There are a huge percentage of the population that feel some affiliation with an SANFL club and clubs are still trying to sign up members in the early part of the year but instead of providing something that these people can grab hold of and be excited by the draw almost discourages them from getting on board at that time of year. Round 1 deserves far more attention than this. Would love to see 4 big games with 20,000 in attendance and some free press all about how popular the SANFL is etc. That would get some people to move from "interested" to "member".

Opportunity lost.

Agreed, it's like the sanfl wanted to minimize the start of season publicity as much as possible.

Getting people from interested to member almost means anything. Getting people to games means much more.

Agreed. Clubs are probably better off it people become regular attendees at games than members that occasionally show up. Either way, the weak opening round doesn't seem to support anyone (other than Foxtel if that is the reason?)

If finishing first holds any sway , my guess is the Eagles wanted and got Port first up , which probably through out the usual preferred fixture stuff somewhat . Tough luck heh !

BUMP

Haven't read through all this thread. Normally I don't complain about the draw because I don't envy the job of trying to fit in everyone's requests and usually I defend the SANFL.
However this weeks programming is a disgrace.
Goes against all what they want - flexibility, night matches (other times they program two Friday night mathces, but this weekend is the one it is really needed), try to maximise crowds etc. Why did they program today's games with Port going up against the Power TV coverage, and all three games going up against the Crows in Adelaide, with two of the teams then having to turn around and play Wednesday again.

A better draw for this weekend would have been:
Friday night - Glenelg v Centrals @ the Bay, Eagles v North @ Thebby
Sat arvo - Sturt v West because of TV obligations
Sat night/Sun arvo - South v Port, either Noarlunga or Alberton.

And it wouldn't have made next weeks programming any harder - CD v WWT, Nth v Nwd, West v Port, Gl v St are all new matchups for the year and give all teams close to even breaks as their opponents.

End of rant

WGAF about the Crows and Power?

Dogs and Eagles have the same time to be ready for Wednesday.

Centrals aren't allowed to play night games at the Bay. The Williams Avenue Mafia couldn't stand the idea of being sung a lullaby by those pesky Northerners.
