Players Who Are Good On Both Sides Of Their Body

Postby The Dark Knight » Sat Apr 14, 2012 10:03 am

Whenever I watch an AFL game involving Carlton I always watch Heath Scotland closly being my favourite Blues player simply for how good he is on both sides of his body. Even though being right-footed he is easily as good on his left foot as he is on his right foot, I reckon in some games he uses his left more than his right. There was one passage of play last night where he got a handball recive in the centre of the ground, turned onto his left and kicked the ball 50 metres inside 50 with absolute ease.

Sam Mitchell is good on both sides of his body aswell and so was Warren Tredrea when he was playing. Which other AFL players are good on both sides of their body? Because it's a skill not many have.

Interesting you mention Warren Tredrea DK. Having played with and against a couple of ex-Port players of that vintage (at lower levels), they too were good on their left - moreso if a free/mark around the centre or just in front, they would turn to their left when others weren't expecting it, and hoof long and high to the open side. Didn't have to be spot-on, just catch the opposition by surprise meaning the forwards had a split second advantage and give them the chance to run onto it.. Have memories of Tredrea, Ginever and perhaps a couple others doing this too at SANFL and AFL level, so perhaps was a Cahill or junior coach influence.

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.

Brian Cunningham ... nobody knew whether he was a left or right footer.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

Cunningham is an obvious one. Darren Jarman too. Can't think of so many in today's AFL environment.

Every single AFL player on a list should be able to kick both sides of the body, one thing I cant understand and frustrates me is these guys are full time yet still get caught with no ability to at least kick the ball 20m down the line with their non preferred foot.

Every country league A Grader, let alone AFL professional, should be able to do this to at least get out of trouble when needed.

Right footers can kick on the left, left footers struggle on the right.

Just an observation.
