Has Ashton moved out that way? Moves well for a young fella

I believe he has, might go and have a look at him in there trial this. They seem to b very impressed by him.

Its not Tom Derham is it? He is from Broken Hill and played some footy at Pooraka.
I've heard it is Tom Derham.

Is he a ruckman? Have heard that the creek are stressing cos they don't have a ruckman which i find strange as they still have talls in hately, rogers, saunders and johnson, plus golding returning. Time for you to step up again 'limb' No doubt the creek coach murgatroyd has got derham a job at the mines as well.

Derham is a mediam size full forward. Will be handy for them. Played in Port Adelaides U18 premiership side last year, kicks very accurately and competes well. He is a good cricketer as well, played for SA U19 last season and bowls pretty quick.

Played at Pooraka in the A grade aswell from what Ive heard.

Tips for this week, real tough round to pick. No real form guides and trials are nothing to go by!
Strath over Victor.
Bays over Mclaren.
Goolwa over Compass.
Willunga over Creeks.

Cant wait to get into another year of footy!

Well despite Yank and Pongy having played, it feels like the season starts this week. Going by what has been said on here most sides seem to have lost more than they have gained - a quick sort of the clearance data seems to back that up:

Team, Out, In, Net
Bays 12 20 +8
Creek 9 14 +5
GoPE 11 12 +1
McL 15 15 0
Pongy 16 14 -2
Strath 23 15 -8
MtC 24 12 -9
Yank 15 6 -9
VH 18 7 -11
Will 30 10 -20 (lots of kids to the SANFL inc)

This includes colts of course so certainly not definitive and doesn’t include retirements etc

Bays have been the most active in recruiting with some quality ins so would expect to move well into finals contention given they were competitive last year – will be interesting to see how they go. Also be interesting to see how Compass and Victor go as they seem to have lost quite a lot from the senior ranks.

Tips:
Bays – should be too good given the ins
Strath – Victor’s last trial was ordinary but Strath’s got touched up by Meningie apparently. Game 1 between these two has been a cracker in recent years, but Strath might be too good at home.
Goolwa/PE – Strangely quiet from LF it seems but a first up win might be on the cards. Despite the outs, Compass didn’t fair too bad in their trial against Cove I hear.
Willunga – Tough one to pick first up, go with the home side

Looking forward to another big year of GSFL footy.. It looks like the competition will be relatively even across the board once again. Certainly more even than our neighbouring leagues.

In the 4 remaining Round 1 matches I'll be tipping..
Encounter Bay to get over the line in a relatively close one.. it might take a few weeks for the new Bays recruits to find their place in the team.
Langhorne Creek to win their 3rd match in as many starts at "the Graveyard".. Margin of less than a goal I think.
Mt Compass in a thriller against an improved Magpies.
and Strath in a close one against Victor.. I think these two sides will be finals contenders once again.

Good day for victor with good wins in all grades. In the A's victor led all day after the first goal in about 10 seconds. 8 goals up at half time and then it stayed about that. Final scores 19-20 to 12-11. Lots of young guys in both sides with plenty of last years colts getting a run which is great.
McLaren beat Bays by 28 pts, Goolwa over Compass by 23pts and willunga over Creek by 16 pts

Great game of footy yesterday at Willunga.
Willunga bolted out of the blocks but didnt put the score on the board. About halfway through the first quarter Hill, Kellock and Mcgregor started to get on top, pushing the creeks in front and halfway through the 2nd quarter they were 4-5 goals up. The last 10 minutes saw us get on top and kick the last 3 of the quarter and be only a couple down at half time.

The 2nd half was a great contest, no side really getting on top but slowly we worked them over and eventually got up by 16 points. Very important win first up for us over the Creeks.

Some surprising results, Victor beating Strath convincingly, i thought that game would be much closer, Mclarens surprising the Bays with a win although Gary Cameron is a great coach and will have the Mclaren guys working hard on structure and discipline. Goolwa and Compass game was close, looks as tho the polish of Ewer and Harvey got the maggies over the line! Good to have footy back!

Cheers for the report BJ. Looks like the Demons and Creeks will be the teams to beat again this year.
Anyone see the Bay/McLaren game???? No 'real Eagles' calls??? I see Neely didn't play.

Bays v mclaren game mclaren had the wind in the first quarter and were up by about 3 goals at quarter time, bays came back in the second and by keeping mclaren scoreless probably could have set up the win if they were able to stop us in the third quarter and with many wasted opportunties in the third quarter 8 points kicked we went into the last quarter only 19 points up but the breeze died down and it looked like the bays ran out of legs in the last i dont think you will win too many games not scoring for a quarter but this time we managed it, definately seemed to move the ball quicker than the last few years, neely has done a hammy i heard but not 100% sure if thats right. Imo wilson best for bays, m fennoughty for mclaren.
who ever thought of the saying winning isn't everything, probably lost!!

Cheers hftb. Sets the scene for an interesting season ahead.

I think everyone did - I admit I didn't have much confidence going in given the experience lost or not going around for us at this stage, but seeing Strath's side on paper my optimism rose as they look to be in a similar position. With 39 scoring shots the scoreboard could have been more impressive with some straight kicking but the lads did a great job first up.
