There was also a controversial element when the umpires, Asad Rauf and Bruce Oxenford, clamped down on Pietersen's unconventional switch hit when he was only two runs away from his 20th Test century.

Dilshan objected to the switch hit, in which Pietersen changes his hands on the bat to become, in effect, a left-hander, and stopped twice in his run-up as he anticipated a repeat. Rauf intervened on the grounds of timewasting - not against Dilshan but Pietersen - and after a conversation with Oxenford warned Pietersen and informed him there would be a five-run penalty if he repeated the tactic.

The umpires' decision left Pietersen's switch hit tactic, which he has used previously in his brashest moments, in question with clarification urgently being sought from the match officials and the ICC. The stroke has been passed as acceptable by MCC, the arbiters of the Laws, and indeed has been hailed as a positive innovation for the game.

Dilshan's protest came during an over in when Pietersen thrashed his way from 86 to 104. He had unveiled the switch hit in Dilshan's previous over to combat a defensive leg-stump line and when Dilshan delivered a woeful long hop it was apparent that Dilshan, until then Sri Lanka's most effective bowler, had lost the psychological game.

After being told by the umpires that he risked a timewasting penalty, Pietersen bided his time, reverse sweep again with Dilshan committed to the delivery, and reached his hundred to roars of approval from England's sizeable contingent of fans. The umpires were content with that.

When I was watching some of Sri Lanka v England yesterday afternoon the commentators said that Andrew Strauss hasn't made a test hundred since the second innings of the 1st test of the last Ashes series (17 months and 22 innings ago).

Against us he will have a Ponting like re-birth. Although likely under Cook's captaincy.

England out for 460.
Lead by 185
Herath picked up 6.
Sri Lanka had to bat for 1 over and sent in a nightwatchman, finished at 0/4

Certainly hope not!

Yeah I think that he will lose the captaincy to Cook, it would be interesting to see if Strauss has had much attention about his performance than Ponting got here when he was underperforming and eventually losing the captain of our test side.

Since that 1st Ashes test in Brisbane, Ponting has scored 2 hundreds (one double) and 5 fifties in 13 tests and Strauss has scored no hundres and 6 fifties in 16 tests.

Don't agree, switch hit without informing the umpire should be banned. Bowlers can't change bowling hands without informing the umpire. batsman shouldn't be allowed to either. Totally against the spirit of the game.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

However, it is not illegal so the umpires had absolutely no right to do what they did.
