Richmond have reappointed Chris Newman as captain for 2012

RICHMOND has resisted the urge to rush rising star Trent Cotchin into the captaincy, reappointing Chris Newman for the 2012 season.

But the handover appears inevitable, with Cotchin installed as outright vice-captain for the first time.

Very good call. Cotch is a natural leader and should be the heir-apparent, much like Selwood has been under Ling at Geelong. Happy for him to have another year to further establish himself as a gun without the captaincy.

Richmond have extended the contract of senior coach Damien Hardwick until the end of the 2014 season.

"Damien was appointed two years ago to transform our football team and build a side that would compete with the best in the competition," Richmond president Gary March said.

"After two years, the board is absolutely convinced Damien is the right man to take this club forward and, as such, we have extended his contract."

What do Richmond fans think of this? My initial reaction when I heard last night was that it was a bit of an early call.

Great call i reckon. Stability at punt road is what we need desperately. The pres, c.e.o. have been there for a few years and going o.k. and on field for the first time in a long time things look vey, very encouraging. This non extension of hardwicks contract was starting to become an issue in the melbourne media and if you've got the right man for the job why wouldn't you appoint him. Takes the pressure off him and lets him coach. Now if we could find a big key defender......

Great news for tigers fans with deledio signing for 5 years.

If they can sign riewoldt, martin and cotchin now ill back them in for a serious push for a premiership in 3 years.

It is great news but the top echelon of our list won't be what gets us (hopefully) deep into the finals in years to come. It is the players in the 10-30 bracket that need to step up, our depth is ordinary at best.

Thats true, but there is also no gain in growing young talent when your guns are signing with the vultures from GC and GWS.

I really like the tigers this year.... but that Spud Maric is a concern if he gets a game. He is a complete dud.

Got 5 qulaity players in Lids, J-Roo, Coth, Dusty & Newman

Few decent players in Foley, Houli, Jackson, Nahas

Going to need Conca, Ellis, Vickey & Grimes to all step up to quality players before we become a genuine threat though.

Then if we can get players like Connors, Rance & Batchelor into the decent category we might be a show.
If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

Bit harsh on Rance IMO, i thought he really stood up for the tigers last season and played some good footy. Not the most polished defender, but with deledio and newman back there as your skilled players by foot he doesnt really need to be.

Rance has really improved, especially with his disposal and you can't question the guy's courage.

One of my favourite players now. His courage and effort is as good as anyone. His work rate is as good as anyone's and his disposal is getting seriously better

Ill agree with that may have been a little harsh on him. Wish we had big Kel Moore back & fit I really rated him the year before his injury, doubt he will ever get back to that level though.

Coverking do you think we can get Conners back to what he was or a bit of a lost cause now?
