From what I know and what I have been told.

MSJFL has struggled for Under 16 numbers over the past few years and some clubs were finding it difficult to keep numbers when lads knew it may have been a 4 team comp again.

I think MWJFL had 2 x 6 team comps so adding four to one of them perhaps will provide a bit more interest and hopefully add a new vibrancy to both comps.

It would be a nice lead in to what will be Uner 18 Yellow in SAAFL this year with similar clubs involved.

As far a I know:

The Metro West JFL were struggling with numbers in the senior grades and went to an u16 Div 1 and 2 last year, with no u15s.

Metro South had both an u16 and u15 in 2011, but also struggled with numbers.

This year there has been an amalgamation of the Metro West and Metro South in the U16 comp, again with Div 1 and 2. Metro South will have no seperate u15 grade.

I think this is an excellent result, personally, and assuming with the success of this amalagation, I would like to see it from u13 and above. In my opinion it has numerous benefits to all involved and ultimately junior football.

I disagree Bluedemon, I had chats with him on this idea, as I'm sure you did and so long as it was in the interests of junior football he would have supported it.

However, I see no point in changing the structure from u12s and below as there is very healthy numbers in the competition and the early morning sunday travel will act as a deterent.

i think the only thing that should be changed this year is the under 16's to make it a competition, i would think that your club would want to change Jetters.

I think they could find some problems moving to the Southern League as their numbers took a serious hit when their seniors went and rumours of the juniors moving began. The massive increase in travel time is a big turn off for parents.

didnt you say this about EFC moving, Now how do other teams like it since been told of the merge with MWJFL, and have to travel that extra distance ??

The extra distance from Metro South to Metro West would not be as far as to the Southern League i wouldn't think and its really only 1 in 4 weeks to travel that extra distance. But most importantly, if its only in the older grades the start times are later, after noon, so no one has to get up at a ridiculous time for the 8:30am u8s.

Would going back to u/8s,10s,12s,14s and 16s solve issues?

Negative. That would result in a very large loss in participation.

I think the current solution is excellent.

i reckon it would LK...

just of topic for a second...
i personally believe for the kids development it's essential to get back to this, the current setup is ridiculous.... i strongly believe a kid should have 2 seasons atleast in each age group.... if clubs have more then one side in a age group then so be it, makes for a stronger comp...

So who do you merge with in 10 years when the same things happen again? Merging footy leagues is a short term solution. You don't get any more participants...

Last year MWJFL 16's had :

Div 1
Henley 1
Port Districts 1
Flinders Park 1
SMOSH
Lockleys
North Haven

Div 2
Henley 2
Port Districts 2
Flinders Park 2
Woodville South
Portland
Seaton

The three clubs with 2 teams were initially going to split the teams evenly, yeah, right...

The Div 2 comp was between Woodville South and Seaton all year and the top Div was Henley and SMOSH/Port. Really didnt work very well IMO as the gap between top and bottom was too large.

I had a team manager role last year with one of the clubs but my son is not playing this year, I'll be interested to see what happens however.

Never should have changed, when I played it was U/9's U/11's U/13's and U/15's and that worked fine

The move to individual age groups such U/9 U/10 and U/11's etc was either to appease parents worried their little boys might get hurt by bigger boys or to make the bigger clubs more powerful so they could have more players.

Either way it is not in the best interest of the sport or those that play it
I have a problem. It's to do with the little man, the squashed-in French man, the naked little squashed up hairy boy! You know! With the hand feet

Haha yeah what a joke that was.

I agree it didn't work well at all, the split of the grade into the higher and lower div was pretty much based on the order of the ladder at the end of the 2010 season, which was unfortunate for our 16s as they were in the higher div but were no where near as strong in 2011 as they were in 2010, which is probably the best U/16 squad we've ever had and possibly will have.
