I know at Sandy the decision to go turf wasnt taken lightly and it was only due to the hard work done by a few comittee members that saw the project completed. Many years of fundraising went into it so hats of to the people who made it possible. Gawler council are a nightmare so i just cant see it happening at one of the Gawler clubs and id think that Centrals would be the only club in Gawler inteterested anyway.

the GCCC has certainly discussed a turf pitch (usually after a few beverages) and it would be ideal. Unfortunately our priority would be to make sure we actually have two ovals to use. Gawler has a massive shortage of suitable ovals. Apart from the Dog Track and South Gawler there are Xavier, Gawler High and a few at Trinity. Obviously these are all used each weekend both by us and other clubs/schools. If something goes wrong with Xavier (our current second oval) then we really have nowhere for 4 teams to play...

You can bet your bottom dollar that the council will not be rushing to put any money towards a new pitch there...

There are other ovals around that could possibly used such as the reserve off Hemaford Grove in Gawler East but residents have indicated they would not be willing for sport to be played there on weekends as it will reduce the 'serenity' of the area...

RR, think you have gone off half cocked a little there.....there are a number of clubs who would love to put turf decks in. Unfortuneatly, they need to deal with their councils and thats were the issue lies. One council in particular (I wont mention who it is but it wont be hard to guess) offers little or no assistance to its sporting clubs within the town and I would suspect that they would need to come to the party to assist with costs. No doubt however that if all (or the majority) of clubs had turf decks, then that would be ideal.

i cant tell you that the council in the barossa put in no money to get the turf pitch into sandy fully funded by the club and a grant, the council only approved its installation. as the current clubs would know its a big ongoing cost and lots of volunteer time required which would big the main reason for turning other clubs away from doing it.

You're right.

I'm guessing if a few clubs knew the costs, and the donated labour that go into the weekly upkeep that they may be put off.

Was invited by Jobby to conduct a private net session with the boys tonight, in readiness for an assualt on the 2012 finals campaign.
Duke spoke at length to the bowlers about the benifits of bowling short and fast on the big stage.
Also spoke to Benny about playing at least one stroke square of the wicket.
Was saddened to hear the news that Private Kurtz has decided to premiturely hang up the creams after a highly decorated career.
Maybe the association could mirror the AFL and conduct a motorcade at Sand Creek on grand final day for all the fossils.
Are you prepared to pay the price? WILL YOU PAY THE PRICE?

Thanks so much duke, you have been an inspiration to so many and as busy as u are you still make sure u give back to the sport that has given u so much..

Not much has been said about the semi final games this week so here's my thoughts

Gawler Central V Kapunda 2 - 0 .. Would think the Kapunda bowling attack may have a sleepless night Friday night with the bearded slapper from G/C hitting form on sat, can stock make it 3 from 3 against Kapunda??? My tip is Robbie Johnson opens and does a number on stock and Kapunda cause a upset..

Gilbert Valley V Angaston. 1 - 1.. Mullins struggled Vs ango and burgess snr is the same against Gilbert so this is the key to the game, both very important for their teams so the one who gets amongst the runs maybe on the winning side. At the end of the day it's the two best bowling line ups head to head... Woodards V Josh vater, blenkiron V vandy, burgess V Mullins , klemm V Schahinger, byster V Tom Vater and rathjen V Crawford.

Mouth watering !!!!!!! Ango to win .

Heard a rumour that Willaston have told the Baseball club to nick off and go back to Karbeethan Reserve, as it was damaging the oval. I know that the GC A3's used Willaston as their home ground a couple of years ago and apparently the oval is sensational to play cricket on. Imagine a turf deck there (they pulled up the concrete pitch when the Baseball came along)

Rabish, I'm not sure about the exact reasoning for the departure.
However, I do know the baseball club is definitely looking to move back to Karbeethan.
Would certainly put a lot of pressure on that facility. Gawler Council are a little concerned about it.

Willaston would be a good spot for a turf deck. But do you reckon the WFC would let it happen?

...and again we are back to the issue of Gawler Council and the lack of sporting facilities in the town. I thought shared facilities like ovals were something that local government was supposed to provide for ratepayers? The Gawler Council has shown its preference to move towards a user-pays arrangement for services such as ovals so i wonder how long until they start charging $2 a week to have your rubbish removed?

If they are worried about the pressure on Karbeethan then they need to spend some of their budget on investing in more facilities for Gawler rather than spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on legal fees fighting racecourse developments that the majority of the town want to go ahead! I've lived in the town for my whole life and there has not been a single major investment by council in a new oval or new soccer pitch etc. It is simply unreasonable to expect local sporting clubs to be able to raise the funds to do something like that...

Agree that it is unlikely to happen. As usual, Extractor has hit the nail on the head as far as Gawler Council is concerned in their reluctance to provide more and better sporting facilities (or at least assist the clubs with some sort of financial help, no matter how small - something they have never done).

I can see it now - Extractor for Mayor (he would look good in the robes)!

Ah what the hell, here goes; A1 GC to beat kapunda in a tight one, Ango to fire up and down GV. A1 Reserves light Pass to flog truro and freeling to account for lyndoch, comfortably. In A2s sandy too strong and seasoned for Tanunda, with Nuri to get over south. A3s kapunda too talented for GC and Sandy to beat GV quite easily. There ya go, 8 guarenteed losses.

Running for anything, let alone Mayor, is not one of my strong points....

Anyway I don't think his Worship (is that right? Lordship?) is the issue with the Town of Gawler...could be more to do with the fact that the Gawler Council is expected to provide sporting and recreation facilities and roads and so on for the population of Hewett even though that rather large portion of residents pay their rates to the Light Council in Kapunda and Freeling...

So are there any backup ovals on standby or was that only for one dayers?
Still a bit of rain around tomorrow, wouldnt be surprised if a few decks struggle to come up.
Might be a few one dayers on Sunday.
