Perhaps Mark Williams was on the panel.

I have not ever seen him play even half a decent game that would warrant him to be even considered for inclusion mind you I only see West play 2 or 3 times live plus a handful on TV - maybe he plays blinders every other week?

He plays alright but I thought the same thing OTR

WTF McKenzie overrated. He's one of if not the best defender in the competition. When Macca plays well generally the Eagles play well. For mine #3 is a little low. I think top 2 for sure.

I think the top 3 are pretty clear cut above everyone else. Jeremy Clayton would have been up there before his injury but remains to be seen whether he gets back to that.

That would make a pretty decent AFL squad.

Assume any player on an AFL list is excluded otherwise why is Darren Pfeifer not on the list and at number 1 ?
Also Ian Callahan... or however you spell his jaw breaking name !!!!
They are my top 2.

Just because people who have never played the game give votes to someone who has 2 hard ball gets in his life does not make him number 1 !!!!
Players who MAKE the play ... set the play up are the best players not someone on the end of some other player's hard work and punishment. Give me a McIntosh, a Rucuitio, a Gowans, a Davies ...... game winners .... play makers !!!!!!!!!

James Allan's detractors do not deny his prolific ball-winning ability but question his overall effectiveness.

We don't.

North Adelaide's Allan not only won a third Magarey Medal in 2011, he took his game to another level, and made those who questioned his hardness and inside ball-winning ability eat their words.

In a season where he missed two matches, Allan, gathered more than 100 more touches than anyone else in the competition, ranked third in the league in clearances and would have been among the top contested possession winners had statistics been available.

His round 23 effort against benchmark Central showed just how good Allan is. He gathered 44 possessions, had 11 centre clearances (more than twice as many as any other player on the ground) and led his team in tackles (with five).

Brett Zorzi not in the top 10, not even in the top 50, this list sucks just because of that alone!!!

Who needs to be getting hard ball gets when you get 11 centre clearances? Thats a fair number.

I agree that hard ball gets are important, and can set the tone amongst your team mates, but some players aren't of that mould, and don't need to be. I'm unbiased as there are no bays players at the pointy end, but he is still a pretty good player and deserving to be up near the top IMO, along with some of the others - its all very subjective in any event, and i reckon they've done a good job up the top of the list.
I'm proud of you fellas. You all kept your head on a swivel, and that's what you gotta do when you find yourself in a vicious cock fight!

I know that Allan easily won the most hard ball gets for North last year. The criticism of Allan is churlish in the extreme.

I was always taught to admire the champs no matter what the team, it seems that we now have an Australian culture of criticizing people who maximise their talents

Yep. He is a fantastic player who carries out his role to the great benefit of his side. Ask his opponents how they rate him? He gets and deserves respect for his ability which is why coaches each week have a strategy for him. He still normally comes out on top. An outstanding footballer.

If every one was on the ground who would they give it to?
