If that snapper is legal then those squid are bloody huge i.e. tubes of 35 cm +. Great effort.

Spot on Squids. If the biggest KG's are 44, that panny woulda gone just legal with a tail fold. ;) I know the beer man well and he wouldn't take anything but legal fish, let alone be stupid enough to post a pic of an undersized fish on a public forum. Lots of pannies around just legal in the area he was fishing too, ATM. And yes, those squid are honkers!!

Pretty serious accusations to be flinging around based on a pic Westsider. :?

Must be the angle of the camera, because that snapper looks a lot smaller than some of those Whiting.

That table got destroyed by some over indulged nutter one night when smoking some tommies.
Placed the metho bowl on the table with the smoker on top and guess what happened?
Correct, it melted the middle when it caught fire
Idiot.

A good way of cleaning those squid would be to cut the tubes up the middle and whack them in a scale bag and drag it in your wake for 5 minutes. Seperates the head/tentacles from the tubes and gets rid of all the black ink.

Then all you need to do when you get back to shore is seperate the flaps, cut the bone from the back flap and your done.

Downside is you obviously won't get your squid rings, just strips, but its a shit load easier way of cleaning them!
If you don't like it, change it. If you don't want to change it, it can't be that bad!

You'll never look back after doing that just once, as MC mentioned. Saves a LOT of time around the cleaning table! ;) Scaler bags are great inventions, both for KGW (use an 'inner' bag as well - the fish have a habit of sneaking towards the top of the bag, maybe even out of it if there's a hole or two..) and squid. 10-15mins @ around 7-8 knots is perfect for KGW's, as you want them swirling around in the wash, not bouncing up and down vigorously (unless you also want your squid tenderised and your whiting pulverised? ). It removes the slime & scales and makes them a lot easier to flick the fillets off. Just be careful with just legal KGW's though, as it does tend to take a bit of a toll on the tail fins, and Fisheries don't care whether they were legal when you caught them - hence why I have a rule in my tub that they've got to be 32cm or above to find their way into the esky.

Good tip about slicing the tubes up the middle MC, I usually just cut the end off the tube & remove the backbone. But I end up slicing my tubes open anyhow, as they store a lot better in the vac-seal bags flat. So I'll give 'em that extra step next time, cheers mate. ;) Unless you're real precious about your squid rings as you say, although I reckon it's easier to flour/egg/crumb them as strips - all tastes the same. 8)

I actually put the Kgs in the scaling bag, takes that slimy crap off and most the scales. Great invention.
I had done squid before without slitting them and got a so so result so never did it again.
Great tip, thanks for that one boys.
Just as well there is no size limit or Westy would be telling us off for that.

Hang on, I just said the snapper looked undersize. You said it was legal and I said it must be the angle of the picture and left it at that.
