Well your mob try to claim anything good that ever happened in SANFL as a result of something your club has done, why not accept the downside as well?

I thought the $375K was what was spent on players salaries.

More of a waste than a loss.

The figure , although still large , is 357 k.

About half of that is a result of sponsors not paying up.

Is that legally recoverable?

Wow, disappointing and one would think they wont be going again with these sponsors and leaves a potential hole for 2012

That is appalling... even if you put aside the half that is due to sponsors not paying up... a loss of $150K plus is terrible. For whatever reason, this club seems to have no ability to make a profit. I wouldn't be surprised if they've made a profit only 3-4 times over 20+ years, which would tell me the club has something fundamentally wrong.

Matt Benson comes across to me as a real performer, so I have to ask what the board is bloody doing?

Just on the $357K loss... is that an officially released figure, because I note the annual report available on the website doesn't include any financial figures?

On another note, I read Matt Benson's report and gee wizz, quite a crack at Facebook members (and I assume members of this website also) who criticise the club or its decisions or lack thereof. While I agree with Matt's sentiments that the club generally doesn't owe anyone anything, people who are paid up members have earned the right, I believe, to question and criticise and of course, praise the club, as they see fit. It doesn't mean those members, people like myself, are always right, but to imply that they don't have a right to judge doesn't sit well with me. The club is about to run a campaign for debt reduction, these same supporters, members even, that Matt or the club don't believe have the right to judge, are the same people who are being asked to hand over their hard earned dollars to bail the club out of difficulties that were not of those members making.

You can't ask for people's help when you're in trouble, while at the same time not being prepared to hear or read their criticism for the mess you've got into. It's not a one way street, clubs are nothing without members and supporters.

I am not sure that setting the Sturt FC against Sponsors that have not coughed up the dough for 2011 is the best way forward for the club. Many firms are struggling at present for various reasons which most of us are across in our own places of work no doubt.

What we need to do is to figure out better ways of making SANFL club sponsorship have more exposure so that companies that wish to get behind the SANFL get more bang for their buck and actually move some products because its good value for advertising. Making sure the SANFL stays on the ABC TV is a good start, getting Friday night matches onto the ABC as a part of the deal would be another useful innovation.

Rather than rip on the Sturt FC I have no doubt that other SANFL clubs are under the same pressure and I think its a good opportunity for the marketing people from each club to meet together for a change and to have a go at working out what we might be able to do as a combined effort to solve some of these problems.
