Butcher, Schulz, Ebert, Gray, Westhoff gives us something to kick to up forward with all of them capable of contested marking.

Trengove, Chaplin, ( a much fitter by all reports ) Carlile and we have the nucleus of a back 6.

Lobbe,Renouf,Cassisi,Boak,Ebert,Hartlett,Rodan is starting to look like a sound mid-field.

I dont think Westhoff fits into that forward line. By all reports you guys will be blooding butcher at FF and with Shultz as a CHF, then also a resting ruckman down there (I believe Lobbe and Renouf will play together). Not really much Room for Westhoff in my opinion. What do you reckon Boon?

I dont see Renouf and Lobbe playing together.Schulz is a FF, not CHF, Westhoff at CHF with Butcher having the legs to roam far and wide.

I think you need one ruckman who can play 80% plus game time and use Trengove in the back half and Westhoff in the front to do the extra 20%.

I agree, Westhoff would be the most vulnerable tall man if they choose to play two ruckmen.

Good to see they still committed even after their first offer on the proviso we recruited fev or davis. Great news.

That's the key bit.

It's good you've got a sponsor after the disaster of my ATM (are they still involved at all?), so hopefully they gave you what market value decrees.....

Went out to AAMI today to check out our open training session.

Nothing major to report as all game play training would be held during closed sessions (understandable)

The session lasted probably about an hour and was full ground skill work. Pittard, Brett Ebert, Jacobs and Lobbe were the notable ommissions, with schulz and Carlisle completing light duties.

Was very impressed with our new look midfield. Gray looks as fit as i've ever seen him and with Boak, Rodan, McCarthy (looking very fit also), Hartlett, Cornes, Broadbent, Brad Ebert, Thomas etc. all expected to pass through there at various stages, i see our improvement coming from ability to strengthen our stoppage work and maintain upfield pressure.

Our defence hopefully will be able to create some drive with possibly Pearce being that link man out of the back half, and with more pressure upfield, will be a little more settled (certainly not under the pump constantly to the level they were last season). Jonas also looked fit and his skills have improved from last year, so he could be one to surprise.

There wasn't much to watch in terms of forwards as Butcher and Schulz were both training lightly. Stewart is looking fit and Westhoff looks like he has added a few kilo's so i guess we will find out sunday how these guys work in tandem.

Out of our draftees, im very impressed with Wingard. Moves well, super clean hands and a great decision maker. Ah Chee also surprised me a little and may come along quicker than expected. I heard he went well in the internal last week and from when he first arrived, looks like he has added a few kilo's and is very explosive. Blee and Pfeiffer (if elevated) also look capable of playing games at some stage during the year.

Now onto sunday. Im heading down with no expectations, just looking for improvement.

Footy is back!!!!

Cheers for the write up mate.

My "insider" tells me McCarthy is very impressive and so is Wingard. McCarthy very open about taking this opportunity by the throat, I expect him to be very good for us.

@ gossipgirl- hard to say at this stage. If Primus is to play him id expect it to be a tagging role rotating off the bench. He isnt damaging by foot but can find the footy.....will have to watch the NAB to really see where he fits into the side, but with our new look midfield it'll be hard to find a spot for him.....definately wont get the chances he did last year if poor form arises.

@ Booney- Both look fantastic mate. McCarthy looks strong and possesses explosive pace. Can definately understand why he didnt get games at collingwood but there will be no issues here. He will be a walk up start, looks ready to go and cant wait to see him with boaky, rodan, ebert, gray etc form a midfield which in my opinion, will be very strong in 2-3 years if they stay together. Wingard looks a beauty, so composed for a young lad and will definately push for rnd 1.

Pearce has been training there all summer in a Johncock/Davis type role. Float around, hope the half-back line drop back to help you out and use your foot skills to deliver out of the back 50.

Might not be too bad, but.........with clubs having an elevated level of focus on the defensive pressure on defenders by forwards he will still be under immense pressure.

Thanks mate. Pearce is an interesting debate. Got well and truly exposed vs mitchell last season in a tagging role but im not sure he will be used in defence as an accountable backman. In the drills i saw today he was used specifically as a sweeper and did not release a kick that travelled under 45 meters....which says to me that the josh hunt "style" of player will be what pearce will be used for.

Our midfield seemed to work harder when the ball is not in our possession, therefore pearce might be successful in the role as he will have midfielders there to provide the necessary support.

Only trials against opposition will determine how well this particular role works.

I agree. All those claiming Pearce isn't defensive enough don't understand modern AFL football. A sweeping half back doesn't need to be defensive with zone football; Pearce will be an outstanding player coming from defence - as Wanganeen was for Essendon when he won the Brownlow from a back pocket. How defensive was he???? ;)
