Priority Picks Abolished

Postby Wedgie » Tue Feb 21, 2012 2:04 pm

The AFL today announced there would be no more priority picks but they do retain the discretion to allocate extra picks based on more criteria than just 2 years of results. They will take into account injuries, competitiveness and a longer period of results.

Priority Picks Abolished

So it's down to the AFL's discretion now? Will be interesting to see the controversy that creates when one team gets the picks and the next year a side that has a similar tale of woe doesn't....

So effectively they have said we'll help the GWS out in two years if they need it but the rest of you lot are on your own.

Oh, and to the bottom few clubs we'll also introduce free agency just to make things a little tougher for you.

I don't mind the idea of not just giving it to sides that have a poor season or seasons, however I do have a problem that the discretion is left to the AFL who have shown they're clueless in some aspects of the administration of the game.

In other words they'll make things up as they go, and favour pre-determined clubs.

If I were a Port supporter, I'd blame the SANFL in some way.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

I think it is the opposite. GWS have picked players for the future and will struggle for the first couple of years.
The AFL will not let them double dip.

The AFL will do everything in its powers to make sure GWS succeed. They'll let them have what they want.

How many clubs were not gifted a priority pick at any stage?

I support making the "reward" of a priority pick more at the discretion of the AFL using criteria that aren't spelled out exactly for the clubs because it reduces the perception that clubs are tanking to get the priority pick. There has been enough public statements by club officials after the event to suggest to me that if they weren't tanking to get the priority pick, they were doing something very close to it.

I think priority picks should only be allocated sparingly and only in really extreme cases where the wheels have fallen off. Not just because results over a 2 year window have been bad.

The downside of discretionary criteria is that it becomes open to criticisms of bias or proppiing up some clubs for reasons other than on field results (ie, a GWS).

Personally, I'd scrap priority picks altogether. I think the draft system evens up the lists enough as it is.

Diss, I meant that the system of the bottom team getting the first draft pick is enough of an evener without the need for priority picks.

Yes, those other points you mention are important too but I was referring to direct steps that the AFL takes to even the competition.

I'd love to see the players who were previously selected as a priority pick, to have their contracts made null and void and put into a mini draft for the coming season.

I'd even go further and create a ballott for the normal draft picks so clubs aren't assured of pick no 1, 2, etc but the bottom clubs have a better chance of getting them with a simple enough forumula.
Geelong have never got a priority pick and really have never finished near enough the bottom to have first rights to top draft picks and they're the most successful club since the draft in its current state was created. Other clubs just need to get off their arses and improve instead of relying on charity.
Mind you Geelong have done alright with the father/son rule. ;)

follow the NBA way in most regards.

the bottom 10 (non-finals teams) go into a lottery. 100 balls in a bingo sorta lookin barrel. in order from bottom to 9th, teams have a decreasing number of balls in the barrel, therefore, less chance of getting drawn early. something like this......

18th. 22 balls
17th. 18 balls
16th. 15 balls
15th. 13 balls
14th. 11 balls
13th. 8 balls
12th. 6 balls
11th. 4 balls
10th. 2 balls
9th. 1 ball

or something along those lines.

the rest of the picks are in order from 8th to 1st.

in the NBA, only twice since 1990 has the bottom team actually got pick #1.

then you also get the crazy stories, suck as in 1993, the Orlando Magic snagged the #1 pick with only 1.5% chance.
