If you are really old you remember being taken as a pre-schooler to see the remains of Moores in Victoria Square after their big fire.
http://www.samemory.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=1287
Charles Moore's: March 1948

The headlines tell the story: 'Big city store destroyed by fire. Moore's burnt to shell in 3 hours. Damage estimated at ?500,000'.

The fire started in the space between the roof and second-floor ceiling. The shop was protected by sprinklers, but they all pointed down into the shop, leaving the roof space unprotected and the wooden structural timber burned fiercely. The fire started at 6.30 pm on Tuesday 2 March. The location - facing Victoria Square - provided a vantage point for crowds, and it was estimated that the crowd numbered up to 20,000 people.

The shop occupied about an acre. After the fire it was determined that the ground floor was 'perfect' and once the building could be reopened it could start to trade. While reconstruction took place Moores transferred staff to their branches in Kapunda, Perth and Melbourne.

The salvage sale brought big crowds. John Martins hosted the sale. Some of the items make interesting reading - for example 2,000 pairs of women's and children's socks were described as '(damp) 3 pairs for 4/-'.

Who did Lloyds take over before Bunnings took Lloyds over?
I can recall the old Mile End store being something else before it was Lloyds

Was Banner involved somewhere along the line?

Reckon they took over the Lloyds at West Lakes didn't they .. Or was it Allenby Gardens?

I like the direction this thread is heading in. Can we talk a bit about the 81, 88, 90 and 92 grand finals?

Yeah ... funny how it was a blatant rip-off of David Letterman and most people didn't realise

Graham Kennedy's Coast to Coast was a must see at the time.

Yeah didn't mind that. Although preferred the other show he was on Fast Forward.

Was interesting to notice a couple of years after that his talk show was a direct rip off of Letterman.

Closing in on 41 to be exact. ;)

Two memories involving Lloyd's. I've been told I took a leak in a display toilet in the Marion store as a 2 or 3 year old. I'm sure I wasn't the only one to do that. There used to be a Lloyd's on south road at St Marys where the BP is now. Mainly timber and building supplies from memory. I knocked off work at Timezone Melrose Park one night and drove past on the way home just in time to see the fireys putting out the fire that destroyed Lloyd's St Marys.

Torrens Rd Brompton. A former brick pit that was owned the the SA soccer Federation who wanted to use it as a home base but couldn't get any grass to grow. So the leased it and Rowley Park Speedway was born.

I think once it closed and sold for housing the streets were named after drivers who lost their lives at the speedway??

My old man was involved in the speedway and once told me there was a plaque on the site in dedication to Rowley Park. Have never been able to locate this plaque so cant confirm it exists
