ODI5 India v Sri Lanka, Adelaide Oval - DHONI slammed

Postby mal » Tue Feb 14, 2012 9:11 am

Plenty of words being spoken on this Valentines Day pre -game
very little about the actual contest

SANGAKARRA
The following quotes for the Advertiser 14/2

Kumar had lampooned players taking tri series sabbaticals then making a beeline for the IPL pastures
"" Players, spectators and teams want the best players on the field at all times.""
"" It is really tough question to answer and if you do say there is too much cricket then the next question is why dont you take some time off in the IPL?""

Kumar the great, is more or less saying that players are being rested in this tri nations series becoz of the incessant playing schedules, and rightly concludes players should not complain about burn out, and then play in the IPL
I agree with the Lankan legend, Adelaide crowds were somewhat deprived when Tendulkar was rested

GAMBIR SLAMS THE NON SLAMMING DHONI

Gambhir quotes
Dhoni should have closed out Indias victory inside 48 overs rather than waiting for the final over
"" My personal observation is that we should have finished it , we shouldnt have let the game go to the final over ""
Dhoni scored 44 [58]
"" If you put yourself in that situation someone needs to put their hand up, It shouldnt have gone to the last over"

I concur with Gambhirs comments
Dhoni APPEARS to be batting for himself
In that 44 [58] he was leaving balls thru to the keeper, blocking, pushing, and putting pressure on the other middle order batters, not to mention the number of near run outs when he was piss farting around
Not for the first time this series Raina had to play millionaire shots to ramp up the run rates, and lost his wicket
That last over monster 112 m zac was far too late
Dhoni was batting about 33[55] b4 the last over, and almost f...d up a simple chase towards the end

TENDULKAR
Gambhir made this more than sniggering remark
Says India fielded its bets eleven in Adelaide where 'rested' Tendulkar watched from the sidelines
"" We know we have a lot of bench strength like Raina and Rohit Sharma. To be honest this was the best eleven, this eleven had the belief we could beat Australia.""

Cannot and will not agree , Tendulkar has bashed up Australia too often in ODIs

Malinga to Dhoni, OUT, 133.6 kph, Appeal for a run-out! He's gone! Against the run of play, Dhoni pushes it towards mid-on and appears to set off for a run, Gambhir is also off the blocks but there was never a single, he turns around and can't make it before the direct hit by Kulasekara
G Gambhir run out 91 (106b 6x4 0x6) SR: 85.84

And the overs since
2, 2, 4, 5 runs off

That looked suspect.

Gambirs pre match comments were vindicated
Tendulkar failed
Dhonu might have piss farted around with a simple chase AGAIN

After 40 overs
IN 4/178
59 needed off 60 balls
40.1 Dhoni drives to cover 0 run
40.2 Dhoni pushes to mid wicket 0 run
40.3 Dhoni drives to mid on, runs out Gambhir who backed up too far out for 91[106]
Yep when the Indian skipper piss farts around, there always a chance of a run out, and pressure on the other batter to score quicker

This led to 21 needed off 9 balls
Matthews bowls 2 full tosses [1 a no ball] and India get 10 runs[6+4] + an extra ball + 1 run bonus
Back in the ball game

Gets down to 4 to win
3 to draw
Last ball
Dhoni hits a 3 for a tie
KULASEKARA makes a great save at deep cover
Dhoni 58* [69]
Perhaps his innings is justified as India were 9 wkts down at the end
But his rooting around earlier may have put more undue pressure on his team ?

Its a pity some of us didnt get to see this great finish

I agree mal, I mean both games it seemed India were coasting, and then Dhoni goes into go-slow mode for some reason. It's like he just loves the last over stuff, the hero stuff, that he's prepared to just coast along, let it get almost out of hand, before striking. Cutting a very fine line. I thought India were crusing to a relatively easy win tonight and then somehow Sri Lanka find themselves in a winning position with 9 balls left.

Then, Matthews changes the game with a moment of madness...

NFC
I will say firstly than the Indian skipper is a very good keeper batsman in ODIs over a long period of time
BUT
Do you think Dhoni bats a bit selfishly ?
What I mean about selfish, does he build an innings slowly, to ensure he makes decent run totals at this format ?

It's an interesting one. Twice in a row has certianly got me thinking. He definitely likes to make it 'too close', ensuring a thrilling and hero making, fairytale finish.

But he's obviously exceptional at what he does, no disputing that. But it's hard to believe if he really wanted to, he couldn't have made things easier for himself tonight.

Love the ODI tri-series, especially the neutral games with both teams playing in foreign conditions, world cup like.

Blunder with the umpires, didn't count one over right in the Indian innings and they counted 5 deliveries and not 6, which means that either team could have won. India could have taken a single and SL could have taken a wicket.
