Doc, you probably forgot but let me remind you that it bucketed down the whole week before the game and that no less than 6 games were played (something to do with mismanagement of scheduling of under 15 and under 16 games) in the 18 hours prior to our SANFL Seniors game that weekend

Don't know any ground that would have come up any better than Norwood under that load.

If I remember the night the globes blew at the Parade, Barry was first out on the ground and placed safety fencing around the affected area, he organised a detailed check on all players and patrons who might have been under the lights at the time, then arranged with the help of a number of people to clear the ground of and glass so that the game could continue all in the space of 20 minutes. I remember Barry commenting after that, a series of globes blew into a million pieces and it was a super sucker job to finally clear up the mess.

As always his sense of humour came into play when he said as a joke, "that's what happens you pay mega bucks for the towers and buy your globes from Cheap as Chips"

As for Barry Solomon, a great friend and an even greater Club Man, he was known to water the ground by hand at midnight to make sure all was well for the following days activities of Football or Baseball, he will be sadly missed at the Parade, Thanks Bazza for a job well done and the service to the NFC over 22 years.

Cheers,

Indeed Barry was a tireless worker over many years at the parade. I love the Coopers Corner montage of photo's that I understand he was instrumental in making. This is a must for all SANFL followers (the photo's may be of Norwood players but they had opponents) and is a great credit to keeping the history of Norwood and the SANFL alive for younger generations.

The state of the ground was not a result of neglect by him as far as I know, but from overuse. Not only the matches you mention but summer use for baseball and hiring it out to local old collegian football clubs (mostly Friday Nights). No problem with this either as every club has to make a quid.

Any idea who his replacement is?

Geelongs premiership ruckman Mark Blake has signed with Mooroopna in country Vic and will continue to work in Geelong as an accountant so he wont be a late recruit in the SANFL.

Has Adam Cockshell been confirmed as an "IN" at the Magpies?

Not certain but it could be similar circumstances to Parrys departure from South.

Nothing like Parry departure, my understanding is big Cocky told the club he's retiring from SANFL to spend more time with family, recently married. South wished him well then he wonders off to talk with other SANFL clubs and i understand is about 112kg. He is still under contract with South so i expect South to play hard-ball as they should. Having said that he is a loss to South, not so much in 2011 form but prior seasons he played his best footy and if he commited himself to the cause given his size he could be anything. It's the commitment thing that brings him undone.

Sounds like he should be playing country footy for coin then.

He was linked to Mannum where his half brother plays, but they apparently couldn't pay him what he wanted.

Too good a player not to be playing at this level. Big loss for South.

While it is nice to see him go, we just have to remember that he has 1 more premiership medallion than any of our guys do at the moment.

Naturally pretty disappointing from and Eagles POV. Started to prove his worth over the last couple months of the season, and was hoping he'd continue that into a better year coming up now that he'd found his niche.
