The South Australian Political Landscape

Labor, Liberal, Greens, Democrats? Here's the place to discuss.

Psyber, I don't have the figures, so I'll try to look them up, but I'd be amazed if 70% of the state's actual workforce were public servants

Just heard Tony Piccolo's Light electorate has grown about 25 per cent.
With a margin of about five per cent, the subsequent boundary readjustment could determine if this remains a Labour seat or swing to become a Liberal one by 2014.
Nice guy though. Seems to be working pretty hard.

Speaking of hard workers, very surprised Steve Griffiths was axed from the Shadow Cabinet last week.
Hard done by in my opinion.

The trend of the conversation suggested that up to 70% of those actually employed in this state now work for the public service and that means the other 30% have to fund the difference between these public service salaries and the taxes these public servants pay. The other issue was the idea that about 50% of the potential work force in SA is living on benefits in one form or another.

There was also a lot of gloom about the $2 million a day in debt repayments, plus the amount to be paid for the new RAH and how this is to be funded, and whether business has a future in SA - apart from mining that is.

Does anyone have access to reliable figures?

I did wonder about it - that's why I asked if anyone had actual figures.
I wondered whether it had anything to do with whom they work for - mining companies, retail chains etc.

Obviously a couple of hundred grand a year for life it's enough ...

FORMER Premier Mike Rann will be given a car, office and dedicated personal staff as the State Government invents a new entitlement for former state leaders.

Premier Jay Weatherill today revealed Cabinet had approved the changes late last year.

It applies for premiers who serve longer than four years and for six months after they leave Parliament.

It also includes a security detail which Mr Weatherill says is important, given Mr Rann's heavy involvement in the war on bikies.

Mr Weatherill said he was not involved in Cabinet talks on the matter, fearing a conflict of interest.

Oh dear Georgina, you can't be that desperate, surely?

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/sout ... 6246652861

FORMER Channel 9 newsreader Georgina McGuinness is joining the South Australian Liberal Party in a communications and speechwriting role.

McGuinness, who starts with the party on Monday, will join Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond's team, and part of her job description will involve writing speeches for the politician.

McGuinness was dumped by NIne In October last year after reading Adelaide's weekend news after almost 24 years.

I was listening to a discussion on my clock-radio this morning about the Rann modification reducing restrictions on wind farms just before his retirement.
As I was not fully awake I didn't get all the details, but it does sound like there may have been a "Golden Handshake" from this industry in return for the last minute changes that occurred without any democratic and open discussion first.

It reminds me of an Enfield Councillor/Alderman in the 1970s who rammed some last minute residential zoning changes through the day before the new zoning regulations were promulgated.
His electrical contracting company got the contracts for the 2-storey blocks of flats that went up on three blocks in the middle of a region that was intended to be zoned R1, and was apart from those three blocks.

We got rid of him at the next election, but he bounced back three years later.

Seems like most South Australian punters are appreciative of the $100k send off Jay has given Ranndy ... How faarken dumb is Jay on this one?

He's in now and can tell Ranndy to get faarked, even if a deal was made ... and what could Ranndy have done about it now anyway If Jay welshed on the deal?

Dumb and dumber for mine ...
