Here's OL's next tip:

JOHN Castleman doesn't mind the tag "worst racehorse in Australia".

After all, he's not silly enough to put his own hard-earned on this nine-year-old donkey that has never won a race.

"No, I've never had a bet on him. He just goes around," Castleman said.

"I suppose you could say he's created history. Two years straight on Melbourne Cup day he ran second at Mildura - in a two-horse race."

Meet Vote For Lust, trained by Mildura reinsman Castleman and officially rated the worst racehorse in the country thanks to his abominable record against bush opposition.

He's so slow that if he were to race the world's greatest sprinter, Black Caviar, in a 1200m race he would cross the line a whopping 20 lengths back, 40m off the pace.

In 82 starts across Victoria and New South Wales, from Warracknabeal to Broken Hill, Casterton to Manangatang, the veteran gelding has never won a race. Not one.

It is understood to be one of the longest winless streaks in Australian racing, mainly because horses this bad generally end up retired in a paddock, or as a pet, or worse.

Betfair racing analyst Shaun Beirne handed Vote For Lust the crown of Australia's lowest-rated horse before it ran fifth of seven starters at its latest outing at Mildura on Friday.

"I have been watching races for decades but I have never seen a horse with worse form than this," Beirne said. "Nine years old, 81 starts and still winless. The connections must enjoy the owners privileges to keep racing this gelding."

Vote For Lust, owned by Castleman's wife June, did start a $1.50 favourite once - the second of his Melbourne Cup day runs, in November last year.

There's been a few near misses along the way - he has three other second placings on his results sheet and another handful of thirds.

The last time he ran a place was on Anzac Day this year, his sole finish in the money from his past 16 efforts.

The highlight of his career came in a Horsham maiden in June 2009, a race for winless horses, after Castleman quietly resolved this was his last shot.

"I'd sort of had enough of him and said to the bloke that went with me, `if he don't do any good today we'll get rid of him in Horsham'," Castleman said.

"Anyway, he come around the corner last and got beaten by half a head. So I said, `oh well, we'll keep him going', and we have."

The big question is, why?

"I haven't asked him if he likes it, actually," Castleman said. "But if I didn't have him I'd have to have a pony. They don't earn anything but you've still got to feed them.

"He earned $250 yesterday just for going around. Another hop and he would've got $500. But that's all I keep him for. He's a mate for the other horses going to the races."

Castleman said Vote For Lust's racing career was drawing to a close, but despite his forgettable record he had no shortage of potential owners lining up to buy him.

"I've got a million people who want him," he said.

"They all know him and how quiet he is. I've got a young girl learning to ride on him - she's just getting going. That's his go, so he'll go to a good owner."
