Whilst a good idead in theory Nev, I think the capping of Irish players coming into one side would see some of these guys leave the game. A lot of the Irish lads just want to play with there mates & splitting up these groups would probably see some of these guys opting not to play if outside the cap.

True, although in the interest of the development of the game and players do we really want more than 4 in a team. An example is the abundance of international players in the epl and the demise if their national team. On a massively smaller scale if course!! Just believe it would improve the comp and players and in turn the state side...

Ports best ; Pokeyhontus, Toasty, Seamus/Shawn/No.4 i think, 23 and Rocket. Sorry about the numbers boys but thats what it says in my notes. You know who you are.
Mitchams best ; Johnny Mason was BOG, Chris Careys late second half heroics nearly snatched a victory, Soxy prepared for his 30th with a good hitout and the big bearded fella shows a lot of spirit and continues to improve.
The scoreboard really doesnt reflect just how close it was....no wait, yes it does. Great to see the Hawks with a full quota with only Tommy G missing from what i could tell. Next thing to work on is someone reliable to wash and bring the strip.
This was a really good tight, tense pressure filled game of Gaelic football that could have gone either way.

Very tight game, we were pretty lucky to get the points imo. Port's finishing, or lack there of was disappointing, especially in the first half. Mitcham played as good as i have ever seen them! Number 7 and 8 were standouts.

Tense finish as there was no real way for the players to know the score :)

Well i did yell the score each time after a team scored. That must have given you some clue as to who was winning

Yep 7 and 8 were Mason and Carey.

Onto Nevs idea. Excellent in theorey but would be hard to police, hard to avoid detection of infractions and could also create a situation of some dodgy registrations. Also they come and go a lot so it would be hard for teams to take on players for a short period and i could see too many intangibles cropping up. Ultimately we also would NEVER wanna turn players away especially Irishmen from their national game.

8 teams x 4 players each...that is 32. There could be a clause allowing clubs to apply for more players once all clubs quotas are filled...do we want to develop the game in Sa or just support the Irish ex pats. I think utilizing them to enhance our players should be the goal

Can't see policing the policy being an issue as the players would be designated similar to marque players in the a league

Maybe a slight change to this idea, say up to 7 can be registered at one club but only 4 in the match day squad?

wristwatcher wrote:Its also getting close to the time of the year where we get a nominated member from each of the clubs and put together the TEAM OF THE YEAR. Criteria is roughly based on the top 10 vote getters, each club being able to nominate one must have player in the team and filling in the gaps for the rest. This team is effectively attempted to be named in the positions played throughout the year but that can be challenging as their are only 2 midfield spots obviously and most teams do put their best players in the midfield or in last years case often in goals. Should you gain selection for this team you are automatically invited into the State team. From what i have seen so far here are my nominations for each team, posters are invited to offer their opinions/nominations to help us pick the best team possible based on performances throughout the season and not on reputation or potential.

ONKAS - Gabe, Wade, Danny, Peds, Marcus, Clint, Whitto, Connor and Jamie
W.I - Flo x 3, Gags, Chris, GK and Jack Horan
NA FIANNA - Jolls, Turls, Gav, Merv, Joffa, Tails, Andy Q and Shents
ST.B - Peggararo x 2, Zeus, Millsy, backy, Newbs and Bevo
PORT - Toasty, Rocket, Levi, Jack and Pokey
FLINDERS - Freddy, Toddy Mac, Christian, Bausty and Dale
IRISH - Cathal, Daices, Chappy and Whitey
MITCHAM - Mase, Carey, Soxy

Jack horan my tip for the b and f, runs the show for the goats and has taken the pressure off of gags ànd the flo boys this season

7 a side team of the year wristy? I would imagine the 4 state league teams would dominate this?

7 a side team of the year in position IMO

F ; WADEO - Onk and MERV - NaF

M ; GABE - Onk and RYAN DARLING - Steves

B ; ZEUS - St.B and JON FLO - W.I

GOALS ; J.PEG - St.B

INTERCHANGE = 1 FROM EVERY TEAM NOT ALREADY IN STARTING LINE UP FOR AN 13 MAN SQUAD
FLINDERS OLD - C.NEESON
FLINDERS MINORS - SAM MAGOR
ANGRY LEPS - SOXY
TIGERS - DAN WILSON
THE BEACH - BRAD GOSLING
DINGOES - JOSH

We did used to do this at presentation night but it got culled a few years back. Actually had a chat about the medal chances for this comp last night and my tip was Gabe or Wade but being from the same team they have to have stolen votes from each other. Whereas i generally have a pretty good idea of who will win the State league association medal and top 10 the 7 a side medal is a complete mystery to me, at least it was last year.

fair call there, if a few players had played more games, such as gags and carey it might look a bit different, jamie conlon or goose could easily move into that best 7, been in great form

the find for flinders has been sam magor, played a handful of state league games now and has looked the good, will be a fantastic player

I don't think it would even the comp up at all. The teams with multiple Irish players would keep there best players in the quota and the rest would be moved on and
ultimately lost.
The key is creating an environment that the Irish lads want to play and stay playing in.

Na Fianna have aided and facilitated their assimilation by appointing a Womens coach with paler skin than any of their Irish imports. It was a risky move but has paid dividends as he has made them look like R-Truth =))

We don't want a situation where two clubs have say 8 Irish boys each and basically all playing together and not imparting their knowledge onto the rest of the competition. I just think it inhibits the growth of the comp and players

Would also mean clubs would have to be selective with their Irish recruits and stop them flooding certain clubs and allowing local players to develop beside them. I know from personal experience that they were shopping themselves around this season...

Due to the fact all internationals were required to submit sanction forms it would allow easy identification. As in amateur footy new team sheets could be developed with a column identifying Irish players like the points system in the Saafl

St.Brendans 4.12-24 def Western Ireland 3.12-21 in an awesome see-sawing contest played at a cracking pace.
BEST ST.B ; Backy, Enda Magoo, Zeus and i think his name was Joe
GOATS ; Klunny, Mitch Portlock, County Keith and Wade
Each time i was confident that i knew who would win the game the other team would step up and take control of the game. The speed of the game defied the very warm conditions and both teams made their focus all about the ball. Im glad i could be a part of such a skillfull, high intensity contest. Both teams left the field exhausted.

What was funny was after the match watching those exhausted, parched, dehydrated players come into the club rooms as i did my match report and try and buy water, gatorade or a soft drink only to see an empty fridge  They did not find it as funny as i did and some of them even said rude words to me. I have heard these words before but im not sure of all there meanings  Needless to say it would be good if we could be a little better organised in the drinks department now that we have a real hot spell headed our way. West end draught in a fridge isnt all that appealing to those of us with taste 8) Even the Irish boys wont be tricked into buying that puddle water :vom:

In the other game i think Na Fianna beat Irish Aust.
The highlight of this game was Na Fianna Pirates 7 a side Assistant to the Assistant coach Richard "Dicky" Jones giving his first ever State League half time address. It went something like this...."OK, YEP, ALLRIGHT, GOOD. OK boys thats pretty good. Um, except for Nick Jolly. Jolly you have been really sh*t. Oh and Kenny Fay, Kenny Fay you are awesome and my favourite player. I love you Kenny Fay. Everyone go out in the second half and play like Kenny Fay....Also Tommy they have run out of Super Dry in the bar"

Na Fianna far too good for Irish, winning something like 7.16 (heaps) to 0.5 (not heaps). Irish were always up against it with probably there best player (Cathal?) struggling to acclimatise to playing in the Aussie summer (be warned mate - its gonna get hotter) and their talisman MATT DOECKE playing with a cast on his broken arm. Im told the injury would usually mean amputation and retirement from the game for most men, but DOECKES told the doctor to cast it up and promised to only play in the forward line whilst the injury heals.

Best for the Finns were Irishman Connor O'Sullivan (who slotted 3 maximums - 2 from long distance as he spotted Irish keeper Ross "El Loco" Kenefick well off his line), Andy Quire, St Nick "Angelina" Jolly, all of them really.

Interesting meeting last night in which i couple of things came up which will be of interest to the thousands of SA Footy forum fans

The State u/18 or Minors coaches have been appointed for the Australasian Championships in Perth in October this year and the Womens Coaching position looks like it will be finalised by the next meeting but it appears coach Milsom and his sidekick the GinPeg have not been replaced as Senior coaches and we are looking for someone to take over the role.
A lot of names have been thrown up but it doesnt appear as though anyone is willing to step in and coach the mens team at this stage. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions at all please put them forward.

Presentation night will be held on Friday March 2nd at the Irish Club again. On this evening all awards are presented as well as the teams of the year. Team of the year selection for Men will be done at St. Marys at 5.30pm on Sunday the 19th of Feb which is the day of the final round. ALL teams should send either their coach, ref or a team rep to aid and assist with selection. It generally takes between 15-30 mins to finalise the team.
