Yes, if the government changes in 2014, the manufacturing sector will boom.

The number of South Australians struggling to pay for electricity increased significantly last financial year, figures show.

Power disconnections to homes more than doubled because of unpaid bills, according to data by the Essential Services Commission.

Gas disconnections were less frequent but the figures also reveal a decline in the number of people paying to reconnect supplies.

FORMER Liberal Senator Grant Chapman says he is not resigning as head of the State Liberal Party despite two company failures.

Sources connected to the Liberal Party say Mr Chapman was considering the move after My ATM and Digislide - two Adelaide-listed companies of which he is a director - went into voluntary administration in the weeks before Christmas.

But Mr Chapman denied he was resigning and was not considering alternatives.

"There is certainly no suggestion I will be resigning from the position,'' he said.

"I am not in a position to comment on (company matters), that is a matter for the administrators.

"They are in charge.''

Liberal Party state director Bev Barber echoed Mr Chapman's position, saying he wouldn't resign from the position and that issues relating to insolvent trading would be left to the administrators to determine.

FORMER Treasurer Kevin Foley has formally registered as a political lobbyist, as campaigning starts in earnest to replace him as the Member for Port Adelaide.

Foley Advisory Pty Ltd, with Foley named as the only employee, appears on the latest list of registered lobbyists issued by the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

The section for listing his clients remains blank at this early stage.

The Writ for the Port by-election, issued yesterday by the Speaker of the House of Assembly, formally confirms the various dates associated with the February 11 poll.

The electoral rolls will close at noon on Monday, January 18, and nominations will close on Thursday, January 19.

To date, the nominations are Susan Close [Labor], Gary Johanson [Independent], Grant Carlin [One Nation], Bob Briton [Communist Party] and Sue Lawrie [Independent].

The Liberal Party will not contest the election.

Bob Hawke was and is my favourite ALP Prime Minister. Not having been alive in the Chifley era I cant compare, but I recall Bob stepping in and getting a number of people into jobs when it mattered!

Good to see that some things don't change anyway! :D

Labor's Martin Ferguson trying his best to criminalise environmental protests:

THE Resources and Energy Minister, Martin Ferguson, has secretly pushed for increased surveillance by federal police intelligence officers of environmental activists who have been protesting peacefully at coal-fired power stations and coal export facilities.

Documents released to the Herald under freedom of information laws confirm the police are "continually monitoring" anti-coal mining and other environmental groups. Much of the intelligence collection is carried out for the federal police by a private contractor, the National Open Source Intelligence Centre, in Melbourne.

The documents reveal that Mr Ferguson, prompted by lobbying from energy companies, has urged stronger criminal penalties against protests that disrupt "critical energy infrastructure".

The Greens leader, Bob Brown, condemned the surveillance, saying it was "intolerable that the federal Labor government is spying on conservation groups" and wanting to "criminalise political protest".
