I recall reading that regional teams like that was part of the early plans. The ACT were going to have a team I recall. Not sure.

It is about growing the comp. Limiting to 6 states wouldn't allow this.

Which in turn spreads the talent too thin (not unlike grade cricket in Adelaide!), hence superannuation paydays for ageing cricketers.

And there are bigger plans for the BBL to go to 10 or even 12 teams.

I like T20 at domestic level, but the BBL and 8 teams so far hasnt produced the quality cricket from the past 2 years.

Ill reserve my judgement until the end of the BBL but I think it needs to go back to state v state at this early stage.

Theres no doubt the more teams the more spread of talent
Currently happening in the AFL
So at present both codes are experiencing a lack of depth of talent in their teams

Great to see big crowds at so called domestic games but have had these crowds in previous years when it was state based anyway.
Cant honestly say that the quality has improved tho as the talent is just more spread out over 8 teams.

I reckon that the weather would have had a bit to do with our poor showing against the renegades, but great weather and holidays made for a huge crowd last night!

Most 50 over games were/just as manufactured and inconsequential if you want to use those terms for games that are sell outs. Channel 9 practically invented the manufactured limited overs tournament over 30 years ago with 3 teams playing endless round robin games to win a "world series" cup. Playing to packed houses a whole generation of new cricket fans lapped it up.

BBL is dominating the Foxtel ratings. 2 of the first round matches took out two of the top 3 spots (and the other spot was the South Africa v Sri Lanka test), and the three matches were the only Foxtel shows to attract 100K+ viewers that week (the match that came in third still had more than double the viewers than the 4th placed Eastenders).

I reckon if it was still state vs state and Warne, MacGill, Hayden and Hogg and co. were playing AND they made a big fuss about Warnie, you would still get the same crowds as they are doing with city based teams.

The other night was close to double the crowd 12 months earlier for a redbacks T20.

Still not a huge fan of it but will say it hasnt been a flop, massive crowds and TV ratings.
I watch bits and pieces on TV if no other sport is on but definately wont attend. I can see the lure for many though so each to their own.
My main gripe with the comp is the lack of domestic cricket being played over this period. Hughes, Khawaja, Christian and others should be back playing shield cricket and trying to get back in the test side. Even Shane Watson is probably going to come back into the WACA test with 1 or 2 T20's under his belt.
