These clubs are now spending untold hours on finding cricketers just to fill a team instead of developing the players in the reds sides - what a waste of effort!

far from it Smac, couldnt be any further from the truth. 3 players from my 16s played whites in their last year of 16s and then eventually played A grade. If they didnt play whites they would have been lost to grade cricket. This year already 2 whites players from the first 4 rounds are into the reds due to performance with one of them top scoring on the weekend....... The rate of development of each kid is idifferent, if these kids go to community clubs they dont develop and are lost in the system.

All depends how the club is run

Pretty sure Peter George played 16 whites in his final year as well. He is a classic example of a kid who took longer to develop but look where he ended up.

Perhaps they could consider changing it to U13s, U14s, U15s, U16s with 3-4 overage players allowed in each grade as required - similar to the U23 Futures concept? Could help some of the first year senior players as well if they can't get a D grade game, can drop back to play as an overage player - might make the transition a bit easier and allows the better jnr players to go up to snrs reducing the worry about having enough numbers for jnr teams. This format keeps the slower developers in the mix but makes the pathway a bit clearer. Dare say there are plenty of holes in this concept, but just a thought....

The concept of the reds and whites is fine. With age of the D grade comp becoming ever younger it could possibly become an under 18 with say 2 over age players (to captain etc). Wouldnt be a huuuge change for most clubs apart from Uni

Yeah, that is actually not a bad idea.....

Yeah, sorry FS and, of course, Tim. We're still learning the ropes with some of these names.
However, we are looking for someone who has the knowledge of the competition to do our weekly wraps for us...you interested? ;)

Yes, a convincing 82 run win to the Gullies.
Thankfully, the top scorer for the Gullies (Travis Head) will actually be playing for the U19's in the National Championships in January. Trent Badman, in his debut for the U19's contributed an excellent 43. Plenty of balls on the clubroom roof last night during both innings.

Cheers.

Yes, he is a big lad that Badman and can hit a long ball. Funky Miller probably hit the 2 of the cleanest sixes for the night.

I think Kelvin and Trav will have to score heavily for them in the carnival though.

Caleb Graeber hitting TTG offspin rival and good mate Tim Cronin for 6 over cover is already getting good banter between the lads

Was a good night at TTG reasonable size crowd and good atmosphere.

Port Adelaide forfeiting the U/16 whites and Southern U/16 whites only having 9 on the Saturday and 10 on the Sunday....

And one of those was one of our girls filling in, plus a "no show" from one of our selected players. Many players missing last week in both senior and junior ranks, but should have a full side this week.
How is the young Under-14 lad with the knee injury, FS ? I really felt for him and his family ending up in hospital so far from home.

Yeah I heard she went well, good on her for playing. Also, the Whites manager said that the Southern's lads fielded the best he has seen from a Jnr team and more than made up for the couple short.

Tyrell's knee isnt great apparently. Will miss a bit of cricket from what I have heard. Hopefully he can come back quick as is a handy young cricketer.

I do understand the arguement you make, but I also wonder how many more talented players would stay with the club and be developed properly if the coaches were able to spend their time actually coaching a single team instead of two. Who is lost to the game because their talented wasn't nurtured properly?

How many SANFL footy clubs field "B Grade" junior teams?

District cricket works with 2 year age groups, SANFL has single year!

I think the current junior system is structured well, allows late developers to still e involved at grade level.

What I would like to see change is fewer grade clubs. Surely 13 is too many!

Strong clubs field strong teams throughout and play good cricket, but the weaker clubs field players who don't belong at district level. 10 teams is the way to go I say.

SANFL has U16 and U18 doesn't it? Sounds like a two grades, two years apart.

From all reports
Kelvin Smith equalled Callum Fergusons run record for the Under 17 State Carnival.
Good on him, tipping a big Under 19 carnival for him too ;)

SANFL u/13,14,15,16,18?
SACA u/14,16?

So the only 2 yr gap is u/18, which cricket doesn't have, or have I got the grades mixed up?

That's a development squad structure, not a weekly competition structure. Apples and oranges!

I'd say it's a weekly comp. ;)

Regardless, there's no room for b grade in junior sport.
