I am not a lover of this format today.

Can someone with greater passion explain why this format is important...?

I can only see a waste of time....

Sorry safooty.net'ers

Gone are the old days of the Vic, Sa, Wa, Tas state holiday competition.

70's onwards.... :D

Not to the players that wear the State jumper, it's not.

not sure about that, so a victorian playing in the sanfl will think it great representing SA in a state game ???

Any player in these games are not representing a state, they are representing the competition that they are playing in.

Exactly, it's not SA v Vic v WA. It's the SANFL v the VFL v the WAFL

From my understanding, the current format is no different to what happened pre State of Origin. Basically comp Vs comp. In fact that describes the much heralded 1964 Triumph. Not that there'd be the mass welcome home at the Adelaide Airport these days.

one suspects back then there wouldnt be hardly any interstate players playing in the SANFL so it would have really been a state of origin concept where the best players in the country would be participating.

Don't know the origin of all the players in that 1964 side (to use it as an example) and if they would have been ineligible if they weren't south Australian. Maybe someone else does?

SOA was introduced as the exodus of players to the VFL started to impact.

In my opinion, we've now gone back to the pure concept of what State Football was all about, comp Vs comp.

The captain of the 1963 triumph (note the year was 1963 not 1964), Bob Shearman, was in fact a Victorian who followed Dick Reynolds to Adelaide to play for Torrens after being a star with Essendon. Geoff Kingston, who played in many of the SA teams of that era was from Wagga Wagga, but you are correct in stating that the majority of players in those days were SA born and bred.

Had the feeling I was out and should have checked.

Irrespective, whether it be 1, 2 or 5 interstaters, the precedent has been set and I'll continue to enjoy State Footy for what it is. The next best thing to State of Origin.

A bit off-thread, but that's not quite right rig. If anything Reynolds followed Shearman. Torrens wanted Shearman (and vice versa) in 1960. Essendon refused to give him a clearance resulting in Shearman standing out for most of the season, at the end of which the clearance was granted. At about the same time, the Bombers decided to dispense with Reynolds' services as coach and Torrens then made their move for him.

Reynolds and Shearman both started with Torrens in 1961. You may well be right that Torrens chased Shearman first. As stated before Torrens were one of the richest clubs in the land in the early 1960s until the Reid Murray crash as has been well documented on this forum before.

Bugger - no road trip :(

Would be good to maybe have it as a Friday night fixture at The Parade or perhaps Saturday arvo at Thebarton - but most likely to be AAMI I guess?

That's bizarre; they're not tearing down all the stands. Unless they're working on the surface, there's no reason why they can't still play there even if the entire eastern side or whatever is out of action...

Agreed, the changerooms are in the rebuilt western stand and even if that was the ONLY area you could access the stand would be by far large enough to comfortably hold the 2-3k crowd that may turn up.

Glenelg welcomes State Game to Gliderol Stadium
 http://www.glenelgfc.com.au/component/c ... ol-stadium

"Today the SANFL announced that state footy is back on the calendar for 2012 and will be played at Gliderol Stadium at the Bay.

Glenelg Chief Executive Officer, Rob Nelson, said the Club was thrilled about the announcement.

"When the opportunity came up a couple of months ago, we jumped at it. It's a terrific coup for our Club and indeed the broader Glenelg Community to host the first State game outside of AAMI stadium or Adelaide Oval", he said.

The SANFL is still in negotiations with the ABC regarding the time of the fixture, but confirmed it would be held on the May 26 weekend.

Glenelg midfielder Ty Allen, who played in 2009, said he would love the opportunity to pull on the tri-colour jumper again.

"It's a great concept and a great standard of footy which I'm sure the crowd will appreciate", he said"
