More on the privacy breaches by Security Firms and a complicit Government:

http://www.crikey.com.au/2011/12/07/surveillance-for-service-not-just-cyber-security-firms-after-your-data/

Indeed, far from moving to better protect Australians’ communications privacy, this government continues to propose to remove protections. Its cybercrime bill, which didn’t pass before parliament rose for the year, would enable foreign governments to obtain Australians’ traffic data. And the government continues to consider, in secret, a mandatory data retention law that would preserve all records of every Australian’s phone and online behaviour.

Governments are creating a permissive environment for systematic privacy breaches because they ultimately stand to benefit from systems that track online usage, profile behaviour and chip away at online anonymity. From the perspective of governments, the spectrum of privacy breaches — from cyber security companies spruiking “mass surveillance” of all internet traffic to social media companies accumulating data — provides a smorgasbord of opportunities to accumulate information.

It’s willful neglect, in which governments pick and choose those privacy breaches they regard as inappropriate and do nothing to regulate the rest, in effect giving it a menu of tools for its own use, in the knowledge that the private sector is working on issues like defeating online anonymity and behaviour recognition.

Don’t expect governments to do anything about a rampant cyber security industry any time soon.

The ultra-right's Cory Bernardi via his website Menzies House takes up the fight against...bicycle helmets!

and I would have thought an "ultra-right wing" would want control of the people

Would have been safer to say: "Robert Gordon Menzies via his website Menzies House takes up the fight against...bicycle helmets!"

I put this in the NBL thread in the 'other sports' section but could also be mentioned in here, former NSW Premier Kristina Keneally has been appointed chair of Basketball Australia:

I think you've forgotten that the NBN is a business that will earn significant ongoing income on it's assets ... just like Telstra who has make squillions on it's fixed copper network for years.

I know Telstra signed an agreement (for a large amount of money) to not undermine it by developing wireless technology in competition but did anybody else?

Yeah it's appalling and Labor are just as bad as the Liberals when it comes to privatisation these days.

They'll learn their lesson eventually.

Sure, by all means let the government reverse their decision to sell forest rotations, but then they'd have to shelve the Adelaide Oval upgrade ... the money has to come from somewhere.

Then let them shelve it! - Rann went on and on through his term about all these mining jobs that were "just around the corner". Well let those companies set up and pay their royalties to the State Government and using that income stream build a decent stadium when it comes on line if its factual. They are selling the forestry rights for way less than the income they generate over the term. Its short sighted and smacks of contempt to the many families employed in the forestry industry be it on the plantations or in the mills. Places which used to be ALP strongholds.
