I must admit I've assumed it was for similar purposes as strutting your stuff at local milk bars, coffee houses, then pubs, used to be.
What else is it then?

I know it suits the telco's to promote the idea your should be in constant communication, and use these sites from your phone, but what does it do for anyone else?

Allows me to keep in touch with friends and family that I probably wouldn't have seeing as though I have moved interstate. Also good for a laugh sometimes.

Every single aspect of the interwebs boils down to pr0nography, pure and simple.

Facebook is little more than thinly-veiled pr0n for exhibitionists.

And buying stuff, downloading music, gaming and laughing at people. There are some educational aspects also.

I agree on the facebook exhibitionist theory. If you have more than (checks facebook profile) 50 photos of yourself in your albums, then you fall into that category. Good thing is you don't have to have those types on your list.

Seems like prospective employers aren't the only ones keeping tabs on us

Cellphone Spyware, Like All Your Technology, Keeps Tabs on You

Here’s a prediction. Sometime soon, probably in the next few days, some member or members of Congress will recognize that this is a great opportunity to get some publicity and look like a hero by vowing to protect us all from the big, bad Internet. We’ll get press releases, and a press conference, and maybe some fresh new round of hearings in which politicians will scold a bunch of Silicon Valley techies for being such big, awful, greedy snoops.

Maybe they’ll pass some kind of law, but it will be watered down and weakened by the tech industry’s lobbyists, and then the whole thing will blow over and we’ll keep moving forward, shedding our notions of privacy, growing ever more accustomed to being tracked and followed and studied and aggregated, and someday, maybe by the time our kids are adults, this will all seem perfectly normal, and people won’t even remember what it was like to live in a world where you could do things without having everyone know about it.

I came across and article on line suggesting at least one operator was using an android app as a tracker/spyware on phones they supplied.
They defended it as merely obtaining statistics to enhance their system, but IIRC what they were collecting was more extensive than required for that purpose.
Unfortunately, I only skimmed the article as I don't use a "smart" phone - and I haven't set up the Internet functions on my Nokia..

It's not your employer using Spyware, but much bigger organisations.
