Foxtel Cup!!!!!!

All discussions to do with the SANFL

When we declined last year, the main reason given to the members was due to us not qualifying.

The SANFL had 12 months to get this right and get our top clubs in it and they have failed.

I'll hold my judgement until they do qualify.

If they qualify and knock it back, then I'd be annoyed.

Until they get into that position, I agree with the clubs decision.

Look, I accept that my theory is untested so we'll just have to wait and see if they ever finish top 3.

But lets be blunt, they have had invitiations on the table. Two of them. They had 2 opportunities to participate.

They have said no twice.

As an impartial non-Bays fan, your club is thick as thieves with the others and if you want the best teams in the Foxtel Cup I think they are one of the nuts we have to crack.

For mine, at that time, that was the best possible reason. Glenelg had no place in an alleged "champions" league since Glenelg was not worthy of the title.

This year I am more ambivalent towards the concept. I think that Glenelg's premiership chances would not have been affected by participating, since Glenelg's premership chances are already looking comical at best. Might as well have treated the K-tel cup with the scorn it deserves and field a team of youngsters and reserves players. Plus it would've given us a footy road trip. 8)

Nevertheless I'm not at all disappointed that the GFC has said no. I like the concept of getting the best SANFL teams (or in their absence, Glenelg  ) to hit off against the best of the Vic and WAFL clubs in a properly-run comp. But the Fauxtel Cup (thanks RAB) isn't it.

Does anyone actually know what changes (if any) were made? Surely it's not going to be easy programming a competition around club byes across multiple competitions, in multiple states.

The pre-season cup is basically a TV comp. I'd love to see a club tell the AwFL they're not playing.

The SANFL should be determining what clubs participate. If that club decides to embarrass itself and the comp by fielding a second string side, so be it. Can't be any different to current "ladder fillers" putting their hands up.

Personally, watching Port play last season was turned into a social affair. We had BBQs and get-togethers that would not normally happen for a regular game.

going by Phil H's thread, I'd say that any changes that have been made are for the worse

And apparently it's a curtain raiser to a Crows game. Have to say, that's HIGHLY questionable scheduling?

Foxtel Cup
Wednesday 30 November - By Ronny's Blog

It is now official that we are participating in the Foxtel Cup.
We are not yet sure of the draw but it will mean we may play up to 4 more games per season.
There are several reasons that we will play in the competition but many clubs chose not to, so I would like to let you know our reasons.
Firstly we don’t believe it will harm our chances of winning the SANFL premiership.
It would be presumptuous for us to be worrying about that right now anyway and while we will be setting goals to play in finals, to suggest it compromises this is not our belief.
Claremont and Williamstown actually played in both of their respective competitions Grand Final’s last year, which suggests management is the key to how a club performs at the end of the season.
We are a young group and will gain a lot of benefits from playing more football.
The possible travel and time together may also be a valuable experience for us.
There is the club exposure that is also something for us to consider, which may let interstate people who haven’t heard of us become acquainted too.
While it will be a case of testing the water we aren’t compelled to play our best team in each of these games and it will be an opportunity to blood our young players at a higher level, or others in different positions to which they normally play.
Another positive is our poor results after a bye and while we are in the running we won’t all need to miss a weekend, but choose some who may benefit from a game off, which may assist in us performing better the week after a bye as well.
The Foxtel Cup also gives us a chance to compare our players to others from different leagues and to observe how they go about it.
It may be a learning experience for the coaches too.
There is a risk of injury but I think the good outweighs the bad, so we are keen to be amongst it with management, as I mentioned, being the largest concern.
It will also be good to see us play on HD TV from the new LED that I got from the Cathie Peters Good Guys at Noarlunga.
I am sure Cathie, Wayne and their staff will give any of our supporters who want to view our games on Foxtel, the very best of service to purchase a quality television as well.
I can recommend it.
Ron Fuller.

And as a full time coach it will give Ronny more games to coach the Panfers ! Go the Lonsdale Ladyboys !

This from the West Perth Web Site

The West Perth Falcons will kick off our inarguable Foxtel Cup against Canberra powerhouse –the Ainslie Football Club on Saturday April 21st at either the Manuka ground in Canberra or the Blacktown oval in Sydney.

Ainslie won the ACT AFL premiership in 2010 by defeating the Sydney Swans Reserves team 19.11 to 10.13. Ainslie have long proud and successful history dating back to 1927. With 23 premiership cups in the trophy cabinet they are sure to be a challenge for the WAFL’s oldest and proudest football club in West Perth.

West Perth president Brett Raponi said “this is a fantastic opportunity for our coaches and players to show case themselves on a national stage. The Foxtel Cup will provide unprecedented national exposure for the West Perth Football Club and we look forward to representing the Falcon faithful and in fact the state of WA to the best of our ability.”

For all Falcon fans, you won’t have to miss a minute of the action with game being televised live on the new Fox Footy channel from 9am wst.

Interestingly there is no AFL game on in NSW or Canberra on this day so it wont be as a curtain raiser.

NB - In the winter 9am WST is 11am East Coast where game is played or 10.30am South Australia
