The final 5 system does no favours to the side finishing top and wins both finals.
2 games in 4 weeks works in AFL and SANFL where the fitness levels are better and training is much harder but I dont think it works at SAAFL or country level.
I bet some clubs tank to get 2nd to avoid the weeks off
Always been said promotion is for the club and a premiership is for the team
I think this system would add something to finals

great idea. Seasons' are long and hard and the minor round premier should be rewarded - that club has showed over 18 weeks it is the best prepared/consistent/most winning team in the competition and has proven it is ready for the challenge of the next division up.

Not making the grand final doesn't mean it wasn't in the best 2 teams in the comp - simply means that team underachieved (through form, injuries etc) in the finals - doesn't mean its not ready as a Club to make the step up.

It's worth a try.

if it ain't broke dont fix it... minor premiers are rewarded enough, they get a week off and a double chance...

if your good enough to finish top at the the end of the minor round your good enough to make the GF.... you dont deserve to be promoted if you cant make the GF... Simple as that!!

As a matter of interest how many sides recently have finished top and not made the GF to go up a grade?

I know of Adelaide Uni in DIV 2 from 2010 but are there many others?

PAOC in 2008
As for the Final 5 set-up, there is no doubt in our club that it hurt us in D3 in 2010 - it was so wet we could not train properly for the month

Worked in favour for Pulteney in Div 5 2009 IMO. IIRC 2nd Semi day was hard slog in the wet and with the home game on their boggy turf contributed massively to their Semi final opponents downfall the next week in the Prelim. In the GF the extra weeks rest proved to be vital in getting over the line.

I think both systems have merit. Yes there have been a few teams in recent years (Uni's and PAOC) that were the strongest team all year in their respective divisions but failed in both finals going out in straight sets. In both instances Uni's and PAOC would have probably been more competitive in the higher division than the other team who managed to make it up, particularly Eastern Park this year.

However, as previously mentioned by others, if you finsh top of the division after the minor rounds you do get 2 chances to win one game to progress to the GF. Added on the fact that you have a week off to rest sore spots etc. means you have an advantage over the rest of the finalists. Everyone knows finishing top 3 is the key. This gives you a double chance and a home final at some stage. It is very rare that 4th or 5th make the GF so the final point to make which has made my mind up is that most of the time the top 3 are fairly evenly matched so let them play each other to see who is promoted. That's why we play finals after all! It gives meaning to the game and adds excitement if there is something on the end of it.
