More than happy with that, Jimmy.

I suppose I mistook your posts to fish and me relating to heads and arses as personal attacks and also responded.

My apologies for misunderstanding you.

Now that I see you're a left-leaning hippy and one of us, I'll start again ;)

Ho hum

1. Nothing to do with this thread.
2. I had a crack at Fish on another thread - not you. I never even mentioned you.
3. I never told you to pull your head out of your a$$ - I said you can stick your ;) up there
4. You just chose to join in because you cant help yourself. The fact that you say you saw it as a crack at you shows your paranoia which explains your "oh woe is me" post this morning.
5. How about you get your facts right Mr "I'm the only one with facts"!!! (and I don't want to debate that either)
6. You want to keep going? Because I'm quite happy to accommodate you!

How so, I'm not political buff obviously but I thought it was a dead heat and she managed to convince more independants to side with her?

Didn't the Coalition actually get more first preferences or something like that.

Enlighten me.

Either way, she's on borrowed time and I enjoy watching her slide.

The Liberal Party and National Party combined received more primary votes than the ALP or the Greens.

Our system is based on preferential voting. On this basis, after preferences were allocated, Labor scored a very narrow majority of the vote. I think it was something like 50.02% to 49.98%.

Government, under the constitution, is formed by the party who can command a majority on the floor of the House of Representatives. Neither Labor or Liberal had a majority in their own right and had to persuade independent members to support them.

Mr Crook (Ind Nat, WA) and Mr Katter (Ind, Qld) supported Mr Abbott.

Mr Bandt (Green, Vic) and Mr Oakeshott (Ind NSW) and Mr Windsor (Ind NSW) supported Labor.

Labor had 73 members (I think) and the 3 others made 76. Liberal had 72 members (I think) and the 2 others made 74.

That meant Labor had a majority of seats supporting it in the HOR and a narrow majority of the 2PP vote.

Technically I don't think Katter supported Abbott he just chose not to back Gillard/Labor.

Also Labor had 72 seats and Bandt (Greens), Windsor (Ind), Oakeshott (Ind) & Wilkie (Ind) makes 76.

So taking into account the above posts, was Julia elected in to Govt by the people?

Who failed, me or Quichey?

I have enjoyed this forum lately and may take more of an interest. Still don't know how anyone could support Labor after her lie, it's beyond me R&B!!

Mine was a little bit higher than yours towards authoritarian but a little to the left of yours

Same quadrant though, same as Jimmy's. I think you'd be pretty extreme to get up towards where they claim Stalin and Hitler were. When I say "claim" in mean that someone has done their test on their behalf although I'd expect they'd be similar results of they truthfully answered the questions themselves.

I agree with you and dedja that Abbott seems to know which political buttons to push better than Labor does. That said, as we all know the current government is compromised in what it may have otherwise have done or said in that it is governing in minority. This current period was always going to be the easiest time for any opposition party. Had the Liberals done the deal with the Greens we would have seen a much different Tony Abott and a much different Labor opposition.

Abbott has a unique window to do his job and he is doing it well. I'd like to see how it would go if hypothetically Labor won the next election with their own majority, albiet that seems unlikely.

Asylum seekers remains an easy issue for any opposition to score points off and I still maintain that Labor are so scared of bringing any attention to the issue that they don't educate the public about the real facts. They let the scare campaigners have their say (in fairness, this is not so much the Libs but other lobby groups) but are too reluctant to enter the debate.

We (the people of Australia) elected neither Labor or Liberal in majority in terms of seats but we elected enough independent "lefties" to allow that side of politcs to form a government.

The fact remains though that an election was held, Labor won the majority (just) of preferential votes and won enough seats to be in a position to form Government which they did.

So I don't think you can say the people didn't elect Julia to Government. We had an extremely close election and we now have a Labor Government formed based on the results of that election. Otherwise, who elected Labor into Government? Minority governments are not uncommon around the democratic world.

In fact, if we were to vote without preferences that is what we would have most of the time.

A minority government was elected by the people. We vote for members of parliament, of which the majority decide who is PM.
