I wouldn't say swimming is ineffective for weight loss at all, if you went for a 2km swim each day you would be losing weight. But running and bike would be my preferred choice of cardio. My client i'm training atm hasn't actually done any running at all because of a knee recon he had 18months ago. All he has done is walking on the treadmill cross trainer and bike. But the reason he has been so successful is because he has stuck to the diet plan and has been motivated to want to lose fat.
I think Q means swimming is a highly inefficient mode to burn fat.
If running is boring you try varying the runs...
Up hill
Sprints
Sprints uphill (painful)
HIIT
Fasted cardio (great fat burner)
Or
Boxing
Kickboxing
Skipping
Plyometrics
Sometimes you need to step out of "it works best for me" mentality and try new methods and shock the body into a response.
