No , have my own business actually.

But I understand and have an empathy for people.

No one is disputing that CEO;s should get paid more , you are raisng that to suit your arguement. That is twice I have said that.

I answered your question immediately, southee.

I agree with HP, nobody has suggested CEO's shouldn't be paid more.

Of course, I have a problem with them being paid hundreds of times more for sacking workers, but that's just me.

I have no issue with any CEO receiving a pay rise, but there's no justifiable reason why it should be 70% as opposed to less than the inflation rate for other workers in the company.

Selfish prick.

Some of the Virgin crew probably have no idea how much QANTAS staff are after.

It's much more complicated than that.

There are issues for Qantas relating to costs being higher here than in Asia, where they'd like to take the airline. They've chosen to bring it to a head without warning, by taking drastic action which has caused major trouble for passengers and staff,

There has been very little strike action in this dispute. The only action pilots have taken is to wear a different tie and make passenger announcements. Other staff have been on strike for only a total of 7 hours.

There is also no doubt Alan Joyce has been less than truthful in claiming this was only decided yesterday. I know how some don't like 'lies' being told, so I look forward to their response if Mr Joyce hasn't told the truth about this.

That is if he's finished counting his $96,000 per week salary.

wow go on strike and cost your company millions of dollars a day for job security and a pay rise, yep thats going to get you what you want. So in really the unions have screwed the works again, now they ain't going to get a rise because qantas will say they can't afford to, and job security will be lower. I just don't understand not just qantas staff but in all other fields of work how you can accept a job the go on strike for a a pay rise. If you don't like the pay go somewhere else it's pretty simple.

It's the management who have gone on strike.

It's the management who have had a 70% pay rise.

It's the management who want to shift Qantas to Asia to pay lower wages.

Never mind the facts, it's easier to just bash the unions

It's the 'management' who are employed to run the company, not the unions.

It's the unions (in this case) who persist in pursuing claims that have short term benefit for employees but long term pain and possible extinction for the company. No point in persisting with unsustainable claims for the employees you represent if the company they work for is internationally uncompetitive.

And a well-deserved bashing in this case, dedja :D

It's all about shifting Qantas to being a low cost airline based in Asia.

As for short-term benefit and long-term pain, how do you rate the CEO's salary increase?

i dont believe its certified. And he has stated that he wont get paid while the planes are on the ground. But im sure he could afford it.

I still believe what ever anyone tells me IMO the unions are a bunch of greedy b's and have always been like that. They may think they are doing 'better' for the workers but i dont believe so. I have NEVER become part of a union and never will. If you dont like your job or how it treats you to a certain point (being fair not slave labour etc) THEN QUIT!!!!!!

Joyce obviously thinks it's worth cutting his nose off to spite his face. He complains that disruptions are causing losses to Qantas, so he decides to improve the situation by disrupting EVERY FLIGHT! Fair enough that CEOs get paid more than 'ordinary' workers, but a 70% increase, when he argues against a 3 or 4% increase? Not a smart CEO if he can't see how a move like that would hurt the company.

If Qantas want's to take there operations oversea's there going to no matter what and going on strike is only going to make up Qantas mind about doing so. I think it's funny that people are blaming Qantas for all of this, at the end of the day if the workers didn't go on strike in the first place then they wouldn't be in this situation that they are now. Unions are just as bad as these ceo's on big dollars they take all this money for nothing, These employees are now in a worse place then before they started this.

The above link to the CEO's speech to shareholders makes some interesting reading.
During 2010/11 QANTAS' profit increased by 46% to $552 million.
The CEO's statement goes on to say that if it were not for natural disasters such as the cyclones etc. profit would have jumped by an additional $224 million.
I think most businesses would be extremely happy with a 46% jump in profits.
So much for QANTAS doing it tough!!!
Cheers

And you also have to remember other clients.

Catering = a massive amount of catering & food stuffs going to waste, cancelled orders etc etc.

Refuelling Staff = Staff are rostered to cover all Airlines, and now they'll have refuellers standing around doing nothing, not to mention the fuel companies missing out on millions of dollars worth of fuel sales.

Air Freight. = The subsidiary of QANTAS, Australian air Express, exclusively uses belly space of QF flights to move cargo, over the weekend. This includes newspapers / Perishables / Australia Post mail and 100's of tonnes of other general Airfreight. This freight would have to be redistributed either by road or by utilising the Freighter Aircraft which usually sit idol over the weekend.

The Airports etc = Shops, Parking, Hire Cars, other workers ie cleaners, AFP staff, Custom Staff, Air Traffic Controllers etc etc.
