Rough, vicious matches

Postby spell_check » Sun Oct 23, 2011 7:41 pm

Watching "The Way it Was" for the 1987 season; it highlighted a match between West and Glenelg in Round 21. (Go to 57:11)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BHi08Zpb3E

When was the last time an SANFL match had that many incidents in it? I know there have been some matches with a few talking points in it in recent times (i.e. Round 7 @ Woodville last year) , but these incidents were full blooded, and the threat of serious injury were quite real.

I think it goes to show the lack of big brawls, cheap shots and king hits of the SANFL in perhaps the last 15 years.

Others which of course will be brought up include the 1983 match between Glenelg and Port at Glenelg; the 1991 Grand Final; 1988 pre match brawl between Norwood and Central. Are there others that stand out; and when was the last truly big brawl, complete with haymakers and point scoring punches?

There was a Central v North (?) game at Adelaide Oval a few years ago, from memory, where a fight late in the 2nd term saw a few kids linining up along the fence line ready for mini-league found themselves right amongst the action.

There have been a couple of big fights at Coopers Stadium through the 2000's between Central and Norwood - on and off the field !!!

The game is too sanitised to have games like that 1987 match anymore. Cant even remember the last time Port played in a game like that.

Remember a final between West and Port in 1998 that got quite spiteful after half time.

And I thought it was only Port games that included that much rough play ;)

Noticed John Roberts kick his 100th goal on that video and some pretty happy North supporters enter the field of play at about 1hr 40 seconds. I wonder if he was the difference in North overcoming the Bays in the GF that year.

Yes, but he had been involved in some fairly ordinary incidents prior to the king hit. You only have to look at the replay of the game to see that he would have been suspended for a number of games if the trial by video was as stringent then as it is now. In fact it was always alleged that he nearly lost his job at a prominent SA college because of some of his actions in the first quarter. It was further alleged that it was only the pleadings of Darel Hart that saved Simpson from being dismissed.

No one said that it was good enough for a king hit. All I am saying watch the replay and then say that Simpson didn't do some things that he would not have been very proud of himself. It could be said that the gutless eye gouger was smacked by the gutless king hitter.
