Adelaide Power

Let's face it. SA footy is stuffed. You can't attract decent players and decent players who do get drafted can't piss off quick enough. Adelaide can't support two teams. Nobody cares about your little showdowns. Bite the bullett and merge the Adelaide Football Corporation and the failed 'Port' Power experiment. Welcome to the league a new Powerhouse..the Adelaide Power.

This combined team would pack em at footy park every second week. They would be a pretty fair side too. Think of all the duds that could be rightfully given the arse for the betterment of SA football. Sando the Geelong legend is clearly the coach so bye bye Matty. You could get rid of all those dodgy fringe players from the Cows and Power and have a real football side that really is for all South Australians.

Keep the Adelaide name and piss off anything to do with Port Adelaide. That hasn't worked and can't continue to work. Can't base an AFL team on an SANFL entity BUZZZ. Keep the Power name though because it is well known that Crows are carrion birds...might as well have called the Crows the Vultures..the very bottom of the pecking order when it comes to bird species. Hawks and Eagles hunt and kill their own but Crows just fly down and feast on the road kill.

Keep the Adelaide colours..state colours...state based side...the team for all South Australians. So put away the knives and hatchets, roll up the sleeves and do what South Australians do best...get together and stick it up the Vics. You know you want to. Go Adelaide Power!

No chance they would be a powerhouse though REB, that's where the argument is flawed...

I reckon AFL every week in Adelaide with two clubs is viable but only if the Port part is gotten rid of. Maybe have teams with a north/south or east/west rivalry instead.

I think 2 teams here will be viable (but will conceed Im nowhere near as confident with that as I once was).

Been saying for ages that until the town can get near capacity for a Showdown, drop them back to 1 per season.

Will never happen. The Adelaide teams will improve eventually. The comp is set up to ebb and flow.
Maybe they should both look towards
kadinia (formerly know as handbag) park for inspiration.

If Adelaide can't support 2 teams then we are the back water that all other states accuse us of being. Which is not un true in my opinion. Anyway although REB your idea has a sense of Logic to it, I think it is safe to say it wont happen for the next 5 years at least.

As per the other thread as long as the overall competition makes the huge money it currently makes then all 18 clubs are safe. We actually don't need the 2 local clubs to be sustained JUST by this state alone so this argument about "can we sustain 2 clubs" I think is irrelevant. It's whether the AFL as a whole can sustain 18 teams and if it ever gets to the day that it can't then you need to look at the poorer performing clubs. Unless that day ever comes though it's status quo. In fact, in all likelihood we'll be at 20 teams within the next 20 years.

You can sustain two clubs, just not two good ones. The Power won a flag with a handy bloke called Wanganeen in their side. The Crows won a couple after they lured back a certain D Jarman. Not as simple as that of course but recent events point to guys like Gibbs being more like Kernahan and less like Wanganeen. Meanwhile these nancy boys are getting homesick and wanting to play in Victoria. Another one you can think about is Tom Harley. He made a name for himself as a Geelong premiership captain who now makes Ponting Vitamin commercials. What sort of opportunities exist for this sort of exposure and earning power in South Australia?

It's got nothing to do with being a backwater either. **** what the other states say Adelaide isn't as big as Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and now Perth so it's not really a fair comparision. The AFL is a business and this merger is a sound business decision.

It's not about existing, it's about being successful. In other words a bit different to the Eagles merger locally.

I know, but just 7 short years ago the two local teams had won 3 of the previous 8 premierships. Now 7 years is still 7 years and Port are in a bad way right now I accept but if we culled every team that fell into a bad hole how many teams would we have left?

I say this with due respect to those clubs that rarely seem to fall in a hole like your beloved Cats for example. :D What a great example of how to keep competitive over a long period time. Yes, it's possible and Geelong are the blueprint.

As I said to mally in PM land, years ago players the calibre of Jarman and Wanganeen came back and provided more than good service to their clubs. I don't see that happening any more. I reckon seven short years will turn to 14 long years soon enough.
