Federal Government proposes a price on carbon.

Labor, Liberal, Greens, Democrats? Here's the place to discuss.

That is the fundamental issue of an Emissions Trading Scheme.
In any trading scheme the price is set by the trading process, like share prices, not regulated as in a tax.
There will be brokers out to make a profit, and we may see Emission Futures trading and Emission Futures short selling.
The government have not told us how they would stop it becoming a wild ride based on panic and greed like the share market.

I'd rather a Carbon Tax as it is more predictable...
[I'd also like to see Futures trading and short selling banned in the share market.]

Agreed, to a large degree. This is one reason for why economies have been struggling in recent times. Market forces have operated far too freely and too much speculating has been allowed, driving up many prices. This is a key reason why the Global Financial Crisis occurred. It is also another key reason why a Liberal Government who supports the virtual free market system, with very little government regulation, would be a terrible thing for the country. Good to see you finally supporting Labor, Psyber! ;)

According to that political spectrum quiz link somebody posted on another thread I'm on the average left of the ALP.
My problem with the ALP is that local membership seems to have less chance to have a voice on policy, or candidate selection, than in the Libs.
In the Libs I can tell MPs what I disagree with about policy and get listened to politely.

Carbon tax repeal could cost millions

A constitutional law expert has warned the Federal Opposition's promise to repeal the carbon price could cost taxpayers millions of dollars.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has pledged to scrap the laws, saying he will "oppose in Opposition and repeal in government".

But Professor George Williams says the carbon trading scheme will be well entrenched by the time the laws can be repealed in 2016.

And he says only the High Court will be able to rule if Mr Abbott can scrap the laws without paying compensation to companies which have made investments under the clean energy laws.

Think even Blind Freddy can see that Abbott is not going to repeal all of the Carbon Tax policy, he will simply do what the ALP have done with WorkChoices and drop a small portion of it and slightly alter the rest of it and give it a new name. - Something like Direct Action policy no doubt.

Abbott electric shocker will sting

TONY Abbott's threat to scrap the carbon tax and not compensate businesses that buy permits will drive up electricity prices, industry groups warn.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has seized on the claims, saying that the Opposition Leader will hurt households through his "campaign of fear".

Mr Abbott stuck to his guns yesterday, saying the idea that scrapping a tax would increase prices was "nonsense on stilts".

But business and energy groups have criticised the Coalition's plan to repeal all aspects of the carbon tax, saying it would damage investment certainty.

Energy giant AGL said it would lead to higher financing costs.

I know it's a right-wing meme "Bob Brown is the real PM, the Greens want to destroy the country because they hate people but love taxes" blah blah blah but seriously it would be alright if BB was the PM, I mean he's the only leader of the Big 3 worth a damn.

Bob Brown as PM and Tony Windsor as deputy PM.

You know it makes sense.

You've gotten confused again mick, the SS are from your side of the fence.
