GSFL Movements
Re: GSFL Movements
Age makes my memory a little hazy, but i remember steve putting a lot of time into Hodgey in one particular year. Played him in the guts as a young kid, and he had a great season. Not sure on when he left, but would be confident it wasnt anything to do with steve. Doesnt mean to say his opinion hasnt changed. For the record, i was also told that Matt signed on to play again at Victor in 2012 earlier this season.

field of dreams wrote:From the SFL forum:In 2001 Steve Hill came to the club along with Trevor Potts, the club hadn't been involved in senior finals since 1997, in 2002 both grades made the finals, 2003 coached the B grade to an undefeated flag, repeated this in 2004 (history making), 2005 B grade premiers, 2006 A grade premiership coach, 2007 "Undefeated" A grade premiership (history making)
Hodge left MV for VH after 2006 - according to the SFL thread it was for coin and a change of scenery after 3 flags in a row?
Hodge re-signed for Victor before Hill was appointed - as far as I know, his appointment hasnt changed anything.
Brings up an interesting point though - how secure are these Community Football playing contracts? For instance, Bays new coach had supposedly signed to play for Onka Valley last year but ended up at Torrens Valley.

Re: GSFL Movements
OK so I have a question on ETHICS.. Do you all think it is fair for our OWN GSFL Clubs poaching players.... This puts a bad taste in my mouth as we are all complaining about the $$ required now days to put a side on the park and our OWN GSFL clubs are poaching players... So a player is approached by one of the other clubs in our league.. That lad comes back to his current Club and tells the story.. SO of course that Club will offer him more $$ to stay... I think is a tad nasty and I dont think it should happen INTER LEAGUE...

A certain goolwa lad gets a phone call from EB every year,n one year he nearly went cause they offered him decent coin so maybe its a little eye for an eye mate!! So maybe go research those ethics

I agree with you baysrule stick to recruiting players from other leagues not your own. On this topic heard a rumour from a mt compass bloke that burdett is going to the creek$ next year, is this true? Couldn't get carroll to convert so they are trying burdett instead? Will also be interesting to see if steve samuels now coaching mt barker whether a few compass players will follow?

Re: GSFL Movements
I think if you look back at past history the number of players that have been poached from club to club within this league is no different from other leagues, and the particular club you are talking about has had there fair share poached from them so good on em i will give you a couple of examples with initials only ie; TF to EBay,JD to EBay,IA,to EBay , BP to EBay-SF to VH,PY to VH,GM to VH,RF to VH and these are modern day and i can go on if you wish as i am sure all clubs are doing it and some of the players initials above are Senior Colts offered money. Lets cut the ethical stuff

Shame I dont understand some of these initials.. There is always from what I can see a bit of local swap over between Victor and Ebay when they get the shites up at one club its fairly easy to run to the other. Like I mentioned in my last post I cant remember (but not that I know too much about the "recruiting"), but I cant remember too may players that would have come to the Bay for more $$... But thats just my understanding.. I did hear last year that some senior colts were talked to and offered money to play elsewhere... Not that I have anything to do with Snr Colts, It seems EBay loose players as they are sick of loosing.. Instead of all bonding together its easier to run across the road to Victor who need to be congratulated on their Snr colts team with back to back premmiers..
I agree it is football and I can get over it.. I just think personally that it is unethical.. and wanted to know of others thoughts... I just feel by us doing this inter league we are puttingthe price of footballers UP again.

Re: GSFL Movements
I agree that it sucks - personally I couldn’t imagine moving clubs within the league, but t has been going on forever.
The book(s) written about the history of our club gives an example: 1972/73/74 VH captain coach Wayne Johnson - premiers 72, Mail medallist 72, missed playing 74 through injury went to Goolwa in 75. To quote the book “I doubt if the Victor Harbor committee were very surprised the Wayne Johnson decided to accept the coaching position with Goolwa. However no one was very impressed when two of our top players in Rick and Chas Kleinig decided to go to Goolwa also. There were also potential players at the local high school whom it was hoped would play for our club but Wayne was in the box seat as a staff member at the school and signed a few people we had hoped for.” (Chas Kleinig B&F and BOG in the GF 72 and Richard Kleinig B&F in 73).
“Goolwa coach of 1974 was Bob Bonner and as Goolwa had a reasonable season he was expected to be chosen as coach for 1975, and was naturally unhappy when this did not happen. On the credit side for us from this political upheaval Bob Bonner and Terry Hobart transferred to Victors”
Bob Bonner suffered a shocking finger injury in the prelim final that year so missed the GF against Goolwa which Goolwa won 10-9 to 7-13. Goolwa went on to win 3 in a row.
There have always been JC, SC and B graders moving clubs, probably more for opportunity or the chance to play with mates – pretty hard to stop that. Offering money to woo colts is terrible though. But for A graders perhaps making them worth 5 points within the league might be a decent disincentive.

There was plenty of recruting stories in that era. Every male teacher at Victor High School was called up in front of the boss (Wayne Johnson) on day 1, expecting the law to be laid down but instead was handed a clearance form to play footy. The likes of Geoff Kruger, Ian Milne, Bryn Bridges and others became Goolwa footballers. Geoff went to Victor years later and Milney possibly did to. I could have easily been wearing blue and white if that didnt happen

Thats an important point too. If there is a good player who is worthy of dollars and points that is not entirely happy with his current club, but loves the league, do you sit back and watch him sign up at a rival GSFL club or do you ask him the question?

Port v Freo in week 4 of the NAB Cup @ Victor Harbor. Surely they are referring to Encounter Bay Oval?

Considering what the great man is allegedly being paid, what is a reasonable timeframe that people think Clay Sampson should be given to get the Mudlarks into the finals?
