Postby valleys07 » Wed Oct 19, 2011 2:17 pm

On top of the signatures of Brad Ebert and Brent Renouf during trade week, Port are set to annouce the appointments of Josh Carr and Shaun Rehn as assistant coaches for season 2012, along with Brad Cotch filling the position of Career Coach.

I'm going to assume the PAFC only appointed these guys due to their financial situation.

I couldn't listen to Rehn for 45 seconds on Channel 10 news during the year. Lobbe, Renouf and co will be falling asleep at training.

The two keys to all this :

Just because we ( now ) have $3m per year to spend on the football department doesn't mean we have to.I think Keith Thomas would be very mindful of letting the money burn a hole in our pockets. If the average assistant coach is one $250-300k p.a. then we may have been offering $200-250k. To many assistants this would not have been a very attractive proposition in conjunction with my next point.

As Dutchy has alluded to, we are damaged goods at the moment. I know Phil Walsh was heading home but the WCE literally doubled his income to keep him. Of course he was going to stay. Scott Watters was also Alberton bound, but obviously has taken a Senior role and good on him.

From there we were trying to convince an assistant to move to Adelaide to a club at the very bottom of the AFL cycle and we were looking to pay less than what they were on at their current role.

To be honest, I'm very happy with what we have done. It shows our new CEO is not willing to just throw money around in the aid of an attempted "quick fix" as no such thing exists and the club, from the top down seems to be hell bent on a slow steady build up using the money we have been granted wisely and not just spending it without any great thought.

Lets be honest, how much influence do assistant coaches have in their first year at a club? I think we have given Primus some much needed support and with some on field improvement we may be able to secure some "bigger names" to assist him in the next 2-3 years.

I don't know Booney, I think if I was a Port fan I would want the administration to be a little more aggressive. We're not talking about a club that has just hit bottom - Port has been average for 4 seasons, and I would suggest doesn't look like playing finals again for another 2 or 3 years yet.

Not saying the Port admin has done the wrong thing here, but I see nothing in those appointments that would give hope of a return to finals anytime soon for Port fans.

Onfield success = off field success. The question is do you put the cart before the horse and gamble on going 'all in' on attracting the best talent hoping that success will bring future financial gain, or just go conservative and hope for the best. I honestly don't know what I would do if I was in that situation TBH.

Thanks for the response Booney, what you say makes alot of sense but I wonder if they left their search for assisstant coaches too late. Brad Gotch mentioned he was only spoken to last friday, Im guessing when they found out Scott Watters was going to get the St kilda job. He has been to alot of clubs (which is also a positive).

Josh Carr has had no exerience in coaching at all.

Shaun Rehn...... took a good squad at Westies from the finals to out finals in two years and at Brisbane wasn't overly sucessful. In fact someone I know was at Brisbane during his time there hasnt got many good things to say about him. As soon as his two year contract was up, he left.

I would have thought Primus needed someone more experienced to help him and I doubt Port have achieved that.

Time will tell I guess.

The concept of the senior assistant or director of coaching to work the the rookie coaches is a new one and the jury is out to some extent on whether it really works. Does it undermine the senior coach or confuse who the senior actually is. How much does Hird pull the strings in the background or does Bomber Thompson make all the important decisions. Did Bucks and Malthouse (albiet different scenario) work with the 2 chiefs in the one box?

So whether Port need to go down that path right now is debatable IF it is for the sake of filling the role with anybody given that guys they targetted like Bailey, Watters and Walsh took other offers. If they can get some runs on the board next season they may be able to better overcome the negative perceptions that may be pushing candidates away and get who they really want.
In between signatures .....

On the other side of the token, if your were serious about getting an AFL coaching job, you could come to Port to be a senior assistant, with the knowledge that Port will probs struggle for the next two years and Primus would be axed, and being the senior assistant and Ports penchant for hiring from within, you would be odds on for a senior coaching gig. You would be taking over a side that has bottomed out, and is on the rise with plenty of youngsters.

Granted auto and I did consider this way of thinking.

@ Brod&Ginge.

We had two options IMO and the fact that administration decided to go with the conservative long term approach is good news for mine. It shows we have intelligent, good operators in charge, what we have lacked for a few seasons and administrators that were not seduced by using money to turn things around over night. Smart footy people know that this type of rebuid is short lived and fraught with danger.

If Primus did most of 2011 on his own then any help will be a bonus for him. I like Rehn, although slow to deliver his message, I think he will be good for us and it was clear our squad in recent times has lacked passion for the jumper, well, not many Port Adelaide ( AFL ) players represent this more than Josh Carr. If he brings nothing but passion for the club I dont mind one bit.

Most will agree we have the nucleus of a good team with 4 or 5 potential "A" graders that are 2-3 years off being at their absolute best and that 2-3 years, although painful, needs careful consideration and planning not spur of the moment decision / contract making.*

Ideally would have liked someone more experienced, but given our circumstances I think we've done reasonably well. Gotch appears impressive and I think Rehn will do ok. Not so sure about Carr.

I agree Rehn will be good,i thought that they should have chased assistants from other AFL clubs to maybe bring more wider base of knowledge.Keith Thomas must be also in a hard position having to allocate funding, but with Robert Harvey not getting the Saints gig could have been one to chase.

I understand that port still have 1 assistant position to fill so he could very well still be on our radar.

I'm not sure bucks would enjoy having Harvey on his panel. It may take some of the spot light away from him and seriously he wont like that.

Boon, I said before I think Rehn and Gotch are good value. Gotch has great experiance in the football world, but carr is a rookie. Not sure about him yet, but you know they all need to start somewhere.

I agree that you have the beginings of a decent side, some good young players and with picking up Ebert and Renouf you have managed to add to your areas of weakness to support the kids. Although renough and Ebert are not that old still both 23 ish I think.
