Well if Saturday night was anything to go by there was a fair amount of abuse coming of that balcony in the A grade, at least it was funny though. But i think the point is that the balcony is connected to the bar, so drinking is fine because the alcohol consumed on the premises is bought from the bar. I remember the police being present a few times at Goat Park, especially after the Shanty game, where i think just about every car leaving got breathalysed.

You are right, I imagine that the balcony is covered by the liquor license, not sure about the concrete steps though. I think that is the point Mop Up was making, the "hill" is literally 5 metres outside the licensed area and so it is basically illegal to cosume alcohol there. If the boys move down to infront of the clubrooms there would be no problem, people could drink and yell all they liked.

I agree that there can be a fair bit of feeling generated from the "hill" but it usually is started in jest and good humour. But any dirty deeds out on the oval don't go unpunished. Most of the time the boys are just trying to get a reaction out of the player they are targeting with the verbals.

I don't condone drink driving, but i don't remember hearing of any accidents after footy games.
A lot of ppl, especially ex-players, might like to take a quiet one or 2 drinks back to their car, where it isn't minus 20.
The Devil Balcone can get quite crowded.
I'd love to say 'play on', but it sounds like the police presence may be stronger...

Apparently Onkas knocked off Nairne by only 5 goals or so aswell?? Plus Kersbrook seem to have thoroughly accounted for Hahndorf...?? is the gap shrinking between the two divs???

Birdwood SHOULD knock off an A6 side rooster. Any accomplished side in div2 would be on a par with A4-A5 in my opinion.

it was only 4 goals BTW and wud have been closer if not for some questionable umpiring decisions close to goal.

I went and had a look at the game and if you think it was only 4 goals you must've been watching a different game. Birdwood looked like about a 7-8 goal better side. It looked like the coach changed things around quite considerably after qtr time when they were up by about 5 goal. Birdwood were up by 6 goal when the kids stopped running the scoreboard in the third qtr and Birdwood seemed to finish stronger than Heccies.

Neither side looked too bad, there were a couple of really good players for both sides aswell as some pretty average ones.

The play seem to be quite flowing with some pretty solid hits with a couple of Heccies boys coming off second best. Mypaddock, how did the guy coming off with blood all over his face finish up? Any bad damage?

his lip split open all they way through- looked worse than it was. couple of stitches id imagine.

RRR, I totally agree. Some of those young lads from SHOCS were the likes of Paech, Nielson, Maslin a couple of years ago and now they are alot more confident and physically harder at the ball. Lofty will gain alot out of that.

I saw Birdwood as well. They are very young and didn't have any real stand outs. A couple of passages of play didn't look to bad but their competition wasn't much worse.

Good to see we've moved on to some new material! Well done Armytank and Alaska!

On the umpiring issue, I don't think it's copping abuse from your own supporters that puts club umpires off doing it, I think it's the commitment. I put my hand up last year and copped more abuse than any umpire I've ever dished it out to, and I deserved every word of it. 99% of what I copped was done in humor.

I think it's more that an umpire has to front up each week, get paid a measly $25, (Alaska I doubt Coco is good for $200 as you mentioned, but he can only say no I guess!!!  The reason he asked me in the first place was to put a stop to me being a tool on the balcony, so giving me booze money would sort of defeat the purpose!!!) run further than a lot of the players on the field and miss out on having a couple of beers with your mates at the footy. Still, despite the rant, I actually quite enjoyed it and will definately be doing it again upon return from the land of the pom.

On the 'hill' and 'balcony' booze issue, seriously the liquor licencing laws are rubbish these days. Boozed up hooligans have been behaving badly at these 2 spots for years. Long should it continue! I can understand the anti 'take your own booze' rules when you're going to a HFL game, but as long as you buy it from the home clubs bar, you should be able to neck it wherever you like!

Getting a reaction out of an opposition player is what it's all about. Some of the funniest things I've ever seen have happened on the balcony. I'm sure it's the same for those from the 'hill'. Nothing is better than having a couple of beers, egging someone on, getting a reaction and going to town on them forever after!!!!!

P.S. Hi to the assistant coach from SHOC, I'm a bit rusty but got some good constructive criticism off my chest! Lesson for young players - NEVER respond to comments from the balcony/hill. Stupidity doesn't pay!

it will be interesting to see how birdwood go, beating a div 6 side to me really isn't enought to show that they will be competitive in div 1. lets hope there new ruckman is better than the 1 they originally chasing!

The ruckman they had on Staurday seemed to be quite good. He tired a bit towards the end of the game but that was due to him doing the majority of the ruck work himself. They had a couple of decent looking young players out there - will prob not make finals but from what I've seen of div 1 footy, they should give the bottom 2-3 teams a fair contest with perhaps a few surprises.

Heard a whisper Mount Lofty have been seen talking to John Floreani from Woodville West Torrens. Where are they getting their money from? Salary cap?

I actually hate to say it but I think your wrong there FM. Beating a Div 6 side by even 10 goals is not terribly convincing. Then you have to look at last years lower placed teams...Bridgie, Ironbank, loby...and all these teams have added some solid players to there lists. I hope I'm wrong but we'll have to wait and see. Looking forward to playing at the velodrome though, i quite like the oval.

cash and other things

Postby the big fella » Wed Apr 04, 2007 3:55 pm

Talk about the devs dealing the cash..what about meadows..more recruits than the aus army..they tell me the game at training is "hands up any locals!""

Birdwood in trouble..jinx wish he went on holidays this season.

Mounts have probs..4 clearances still pending to nairne..

Onkas apparently looked good on sat..shee dominating..plenty of run..well coached..odds will shorten..

Rams have work to do..still awaiting clearances...

me thinks country div will see the action this year..central will be a jawn!!!

Forum.

I went down to have alook at a quarter of footy at the Birdwood game last weekend and to even think that Birdwood will win a game is pretty far off the mark.

The standard of footy was very bad. Slow, poor skills, plenty of turn overs and no hard footy.

But to at least defend them a little, thye had afew good passages of play and with regards to the hardness the groung was wuite large and in great nick I must add, this could be a reason for bugger all tackling.

Footy can be a funny game sometimes and Birdwood may sneak a game or 2 in for trhe season. but going on what I have seen in Hills central footy and what I saw on Saturday, there is a huge difference.

Funny how central teams are playing Div 2 sides in town and Birdwood are playing Div 6 sides. Forum you tell me..........

Whisper around the traps is that talks between Uraidla and Brad Coles who played at Woodville West Torrens to play was in the order of $600 a game. There was apparently a verbal agreement, but Uraidla couldn't quite fit the bill and offered 500, Coles ended up playing down in Yorkes, not sure where'

Looks like the cash is everywhere!

Coles definetely not worth $500 let alone $600 a game. At best an honest performer. At worst very inconsistent and selfish with no team skills or leadership
