Your top 20 albums as ranked by rateyourmusic.com

Postby Rik E Boy » Wed Apr 04, 2007 1:44 pm

One thing that most of us will never agree on is which is the best type of music or what the best albums or songs are. Luckily, one of my favourite sites has done that for us.

http://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/album/all-time

The link above is the rateyourmusic all time top album list as of April 4, 2007. According to rateyourmusic, the best 20 albums in my collection are as follows. (Rateyourmusic rankings in brackets)

1. Revovler: The Beatles (2)
2. Abbey Road: The Beatles (3)
3. The Dark Side of the Moon: Pink Floyd (13)
4. Wish you were here: Pink Floyd (17)
5. London Calling: The Clash (19)
6. Led Zeppelin IV: Led Zeppelin (22)
7. Sticky Fingers: The Rolling Stones (38)
8. Beggar's Banquet: The Rolling Stones (95)
9. Paranoid: Black Sabbath (106)
10. Led Zeppelin II: Led Zeppelin (143)
11. Black Sabbath: Black Sabbath (186)
12. Physical Graffiti: Led Zeppelin (210)
13. Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin (228)
14. Magical Mystery Tour: The Beatles (229)
15. MTV Unplugged in New York: Nirvana (253)
16. Painkiller: Judas Priest (285)
17. The Number of the Beast: Iron Maiden (323)
18. Powerslave: Iron Maiden (395)
19. The Wall: Pink Floyd (403)
20. Appetite for Destruction: Guns and Roses (415)

415. So how low can you go.

In case your wondering this is about rym lists from the site's FAQ

"Many factors are used to calculate the overall album rankings. It is a complex algorithm involving album rankings, user participation, album popularity, etc. There are also built-in safeguards to protect against sabotage. The Album Rankings are updated about once per week." {http://rateyourmusic.com/faq/#q219772 online, sourced April 4,2007).

415? Bah. Mainstreamer.

I had to scroll down to #1191 (Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring) to find 20 albums that I owned.

Notice he didn't list them  :P

236. Well if a low number makes you mainstream I must be pretty mainstream - yeah right!

1. The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground and Nico (7)
2. The Clash - London Calling - London Calling (19)
3. The Pixies - Doolittle (26)
4. The Smiths - The Queen is Dead (32)
5. The Stooges - Funhouse (44)
6. Joy Division - Closer (65)
7. Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures (67)
8. The Velvet Undergound - The Velvet Underground (78 )
9. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation (79)
10. Elvis Costello - This Year's Model (98 )
11. The Ramones - The Ramones (99)
12. The Ramones - Rocket to Russia (149)
13. Gang of Four - Entertainment (153)
14. The Pixies - Surfer Rosa (155)
15. The Velvet Underground - White Light / White Heat (179)
16. The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses (194)
17. The Stooges - Raw Power (209)
18. Dead Kennedys - Fresh fruit for rotting vegetables (211)
19. Ramones - It's Alive (223)
20. The Clash - The Clash (236)

I also have #195 Bill Hicks "Rant in e-minor" but I don't count that in music album list. Also if you're going to include stand ups albums Lenny Bruce would be in there before Bill Hicks (and I am a huge fan of both!)

Some observations (remembering I only went as far as #600)----

The first australian album in there (and only one in the top 600) is The Go Betweens "16 Lovers Lane". It's not even their best album!
XTC's first entry is "Skylarking" (#525). Yeah well it's all taste and opinion but (IMO) "Drums and Wires" and "Black Sea" crap on it from a very great height.
Nirvana's "Nevermind" at #466 is just wrong. I've noticed it's become fashionable in some circles to knock Nirvana over the past ten years but regardless of that this album is still awesome. The fact that their MTV album (#253) is in before it is just stupid.
Rant over! :D

I didn't think you trendies would be interested in my shitty avant-garde tastes.

But since you're interested:

1 3 The Beatles - Abbey Road
2 17 Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (1975)
3 27 The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967)
4 153 Gang of Four - Entertainment! (1979)
5 174 Brian Eno - Another Green World (1975)
6 196 Jeff Buckley - Grace (1994)
7 229 The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour (1967) *
8 289 Brian Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets (1974)
9 296 Portishead - Dummy (1994) *
10 299 Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (1982)
11 376 The Go-Betweens - 16 Lovers Lane (1988)
12 540 Alice Cooper - Killer (1971)
13 552 Neil Young - Harvest (1972)
14 597 Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral (1994) *
15 672 The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy (1985) *
16 778 The Doors - L.A. Woman (1971)
17 843 Pretenders - Pretenders (1980)
18 978 Skinny Puppy - Too Dark Park (1990)
19 1024 Prefab Sprout - Steve McQueen (1985) *
20 1191 Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring (1986)

I actually cheated in the above and counted albums which I only have taped copies of (asterisked).
If I was to count only original albums I'd get down to #1374.

1223 Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (1973)
1277 X-Ray Spex - Germfree Adolescents (1978)
1330 Alice Cooper - Welcome to My Nightmare (1975)
1371 Iggy Pop - Lust for Life (1977)
1374 The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002)
