"Middle of the road"? I would have thought 2 years was the minimum you would offer. I can't remember anyone being appointed for 1 year.

And by middle of the road he means most coaches are given at least 3 years.....

Well if three is the least they're given, how can 2 be middle of the road?

Ill explain -

one year contract means the club want instant success, almost premiership or bust
three year contract means he has the time to develop a young list into a force

2 years IMO is middle of the road, he can go for the quick fix to try and get instant success (i.e. recruit Fev) or he can go down the develop the list path and know that it may well be a tough 2 years but the club will hopefully see where he is headed and get an extension (which would have to be another min of 2 years)

I thought a 3 year deal would have been the most reponsible move.

I understand what you've been saying but I disagree that 2 years is a middle of the road term. One-year appointments are almost unheard of, I think most boards take the approach that 2 years is the minimum they can give a new appointee.

I think the term says more about the commercial realities of the appointment rather than whether the club is after instant success or not. On rookie coaches, clubs need to protect themselves financially.

I think contract term of a coache refects two things (1) the confidence the given club has in their appointment and (2) the bargaining power of the new coach. I can't think of anyone that has agreed to a one year contract in recent times. 2 years is as short as a club could get it these days and probably only if the coach is a rookie at SANFL coaching level.

Massie is relatively untested so I think 2 years is the right term actually. No point committing to a rookie coach for the more normal 3 year term in case you need to cut your losses early.

There's probably lots of clubs over the years that wished their coach was on a one year contract! :-)

Just remember Glenelg Contract years are like Dog years. His contract actually works out to be just less than 3 and a half months on the human calander.

Ok, he's now the coach & the players are behind him. Surely what he needs now is to see the Glenelg supporters behind him. I know everyone is entitled to an opinion but right now he needs to see some sort of solidarity.

But if we're behind him, how can he see us? If he turns around then we aren't behind him anymore. I suppose we could rig up a sort of mirror contraption in front of him, but then he'd see us both behind him AND back to front, which surely wouldn't be ideal.

you OBVIOULSY don't know him very well, he carries a personal hand mirror, mainly for checking for protruding nose & ear hairs.

1 year contracts are very common at Centrals, everyone's on one. Roy Laird himself has been since he took over. At most clubs though, 2 years would be the bare minimum you'd give in most circumstances. 1 year you're basically telling everyone it's going to be reassessed each year. 2 years to me says you've got here and now and that's it. No improvement, no extension. Might not be the case at all, but if Glenelg and Sturt don't make a serious premiership tilt in the next 2 seasons I doubt their coaches will survive.

So Laird and the Gowans on one year contracts mean everyone's on them?

They are exempt from criticism, because their nasal hair is not dense enough.

No, the club likes to operate on 1 year contracts for some reason. I'm not 100% sure why, but I guess it's probably the flexibility from year to year. From what I understand, 1 year contracts across the board is the norm for Centrals these days.
