An email sent to Channel Nine today by me
The Producer The Footy Show
For the Woodville West Torrens Football Club, the SANFL Premiers for 2011, I wish to advise the following regarding the winning entry of this years "Almost Footy Legends"
The winner of this competition won a $65,000 four wheel drive. The subject of the video, Ernie, an icon of the Woodville West Torrens Football Club has received nothing what so ever.
Ernie attended every game that I can remember over the past 20 years at least. He is a disabled person, a resident of Minda Home in Adelaide. This year, at age 77 he has encountered some health problems and has not been able to attend matches and the video for the Legends was taken at a Reserves grade final between Eagles and Port in 2010. Speaking with his carer at the West End Brewery Premiers Chimney unveiling on Tuesday this week I was told that in his room at Minda he does not even have a decent television set.
I was hopeful that the winners of the main prize would have made an effort to perhaps contact Ernie and offer a small gift in appreciation, just a box of chocolates even.
This has not been the case.
I know privacy laws prevent the release of details but Channel Nine could I think suggest to the winners that something might be arranged.
I was surprised that the Adelaide media did not pick up on the story.
Ernie has previously been on the Footy show in 2002 in Sam's Street talk.
I hope that Channel Nine can help acknowledge Ernie in some way.

Unless Cos Cardone is still producing, they wont know what Minda is as it is a SA term only.

Hope you get a response and some action.

Meanwhile It would be good perhaps through Good Guys and the club to arrange a new TV for Ernie.

Maybe cd could use his influence?

I think in the days of Woodville the club and players would celebrate his birthday with him.

He is one of the club's most diehard supporters

Good on you Reddeer.

Ernie also used to attend Woodville A Grade District Cricket matches. Having been the scorer for this team for some years, Ernie would drive me (and the players) to distraction with his incessant "what's the score, what's the score" and his country and western tapes (especially the ones with the yodelling). But the boys loved him, as did the footballers, and the footy club always donated him new guernsies as the designs changed.

A true icon.

well done, great letter, whilst it was funny to watch I presumed that Ernie would have received something, how poor of the persons that won the prize not to do anything in anyway to acknowledge they won a major prize by doing nothing else but taking a videotape of something. Also shows how good the producers etc from the footy show are. Unfortunately dont hold your breath for a response

Very poor form by the winners not to offer Ernie something

He is a legend. I remember one game at Adelaide Oval, the ball went over the goals down the scoreboard end. I picked up the footy, next thing I knew, Ernie grabbed me in a vicelike grip and started shaking me until I coughed up the footy. He then grabbed the footy, and booted in back over the fence to Jason Spehr.

I wasnt too happy with him at the time, but had a good laugh when I saw him doing it to other people!

Hope you get better soon Ernie, you are an Eagles legend!

I know what you mean with Ernie kicking the ball back............ I caught a bus from from Richmond Oval one day and Ernie was standing next to me.......... I asked how he was going and he said " I kicked 4 goals 5 today"............ Curiously I looked at him and said " what do you mean you kicked 4 goals 5 today?............. Ernie said " I kicked 4 goals 5 today kicking the ball back"!.....such a lovely fellow......get well soon Ernie!

If it was still footy season there would be a response, because The Footy Show is a self serving parasite that would heap praise on itself for donating something to someone not so fortunate. But there's no publicity to be had, so it will go through to the keeper.

He used to come out and watch us kids play football on Saturday mornings at Brighton High/Paringa Park.

The man is a real local legend and a great bloke. I still see him somedays walking down Brighton Road with his radio to his ear listening into scores.

Hope there is some good that comes out of this.

Hope he gets well soon too. :D

Agree with everything said here so far. Seems pretty rotten that the star of the video, and the person who filmed it, don't get a cent while Channel 9 give a car to a lucky winner.

Where this story becomes interesting though is that the video was sent in by a full time employee from a football department at a Melbourne based AFL club. You can probably work out that the person does some work in the recruiting area.

The entry was submitted under the name of his wife - and the car was collected by his wife on the Grand Final show.

I doubt one of the hosts would have even been aware that there was any connection whatsoever, but let's just say it would have been slightly awkward if his show was handing over the keys to someone who works full time in the footy department of the club he's now involved with.

Not sure what sort of contracts football club staff sign, but you'd have to question whether this particular AFL club allowing their employees to use club resources and materials and sending them away to win prizes is allowed in their contract anyway.

If it were for a Norwood supporter then I would just have a whip round at tonight's b&f and get the funds that way. Seeing how Ernie is a wiggle someone connected to the hybrids can organise the details and then I will forward my contribution.
