Norwood: What happened?

Postby Rik E Boy » Sun Oct 09, 2011 10:38 am

We don't get to see any SANFL up here in the Swich so I have to ask. WTF happened to the Redlegs in the finals? I know Campbell did his ACL but did we lose anyone else? How can we go from being a serious contender to a team that couldn't kick ten goals in two finals? I remember us kicking two goals in a final against Port in 1988 and I had hoped I'd never see a repeat of that.

Norwood - what happened?

regards,

The loss of Young hurt us badly. He was probably the player of the finals for us until he broke his leg.
After losing to Centrals we were never going to get up the following week. We lost Campbell, Young and Hughes aswell as the match. There was also a heap of very sore guys after that match and it took its toll mentally and physically. To be honest 3rd was about all we deserved this year. Had a 2-6 record against the 2 grand final sides over the year, we seemed to easily account for the lower placed sides but terrible against the top 2.

Dont think so, most people i spoke to at the club before the season started thought that we would make finals but were a 5-6 goal worse side than last year. As i said before we had no problems defeating the lower sides but just wernt good enough against Centrals and the Eagles, third is about where I thought we would finish but obviously i was hoping for better.
Am already worried about next season, without some major recruiting we wont play finals

Yep Jim, the players injured in the 2nd semi were a big difference come prelim final day. I also think the eagles did their homework on cam shenton. Kicked 6 in the QF and hardly saw it in the prelim.

Unfortunately, nothing happened. That's the problem. We don't have the style of play to compete on Footy Park in September/October. Simple as that really.

2010 was the one that got away, not 2011.

Well I read a lot of posts during the year that said otherwise.

All posters and supporters like to talk their teams up and most of it is just wishful thinking.
I dont think anyone involved with the Norwood Football club got ahead of themselves and they knew a lot of work had to be done

Also think that Bassetts coaching began to be worked out and overcome by the opposition. Its hard to activate plan B's when your list is depleted. Wont be surprised if Norwood make some cuts to their squad and roll the dice in terms of recruiting to change the structure of the group.

Will be plenty of changes at Norwood in off season, have heard that 6 or 7 new faces will be arriving at the club. Just hope they are quality and not more duds

There's only so many changes to the list that can be made though .. I don't think we'll slip as much as others believe, but would think we'd be pushing to be right up there with the contenders.

I don't think it was all that difficult to work out Bassett's coaching, he does the same thing every week, same game style, same rotations, etc. There has never been a "Plan B", he sticks with his game plan, irrespective of the score.

In order to pull off that plan, you need leg speed and gut runners. The squad we hgad in 2010 were able to pull it off, but going into 2011 with the loss of Puopolo, Duigan, Phillips, Lower, Trotter and Weatherald meant a fine tuning of our game style. That never happened. Failure in 2011 was inevitable. I saw players this year totally confused by their role, and watching the Reserves floundering yesterday with this ridiculous style was cringeworthy. Back to basics Bass, and quickly.

Agree AH, the reserves was saved but it's exciting last quarter, up to then was not a good game of footy.

Woeful game of football. They could have saved us (Norwood and Glenelg fans alike) a lot of heartache and frustration by simply tossing a coin to decide the winner of the game. At least we could have then retired to the bar for the next 2.5 hours.
