Don't be too rough on him. You'd think the SANFL was cr@p too, if you'd spent all year watching Sturt matches.

whufc wrote:From an outside point of view Bassett didnt recruit and then failed to make the changes to suit the squad.

Not having Pupoplo and Duigan was a huge amount of run, carry and pace to lose from the defensive 50, none of the recruits were ultra quick or attacking defenders in the same mould.

What i saw in the second semi was that the game plan hadn't adjusted and the difference this year was while they were chipping around in the back half they didnt have that explosive player willing to break the lines and play on as Pup and Duigan did last year.

Either he had to recruit to the structure or change the structure to suit the squad he had.

NW 2010 was every bit as good as CD
The loss of pace and hardness in 2011 meant it was at least a 6 goal inferior team
Players missing that really really became irreplaceable
LOWER
WEATHERALD
PUOPOLO
DUIGAN
PHILLIPS
TROTTER

Unfortunately NW was left with a few more frontrunners and injury prone players this season
Added to this , the derrrrrr selectiion of 4 ruckmen in one side was baffling when Doyle made a comeback
If Brady Dawe is a centre half forward Im a gorillas cousin
The best ruckman at the club was played out of position when Doyle came back

WHUFC has summed it up very well, the game plan for the 2011 team was unsuitable
You cant play that style without hard running footballers

Having said all that, Bassett did quite well to almost get this average side into a Minor premiership

PS
Congratulations on the 2nd and 3rd best sides in the comp destroy SANFL football today
Its what we come to expect when these 2 teams play each other
No wonder we only got a 6k crowd today

Sorry, have been at a wedding all day but was trying to check on scores as often as possible. Gutted, ill sit down and watch the replay tomorrow. Disappointing to end that way but the writing was on the wall after last week. Thank goodness we dont get to embarassed next week as im sure we would have if we had scraped in. Lot of recruiting required next year. We were a far inferior side to last year and im amazed we got so far, it says a bit about how much the comp has to catch up to Centrals. Could be a bleak few years coming up at Norwood, reckon we will lose a few more through retirement and injury

People are perfectly entitled to knock any aspect of the game, the comp or the crowds.
And since when does someone's opinion not count because they aren't Leigh Whicker's love child and in love with the 'grass roots' footy of SANFL?
Thinking people on here know that less than 7000 for a prelim is crap, and those same intelligent people realise that the standard of the SANFL comp is constantly being over-inflated by serve-serving nitwits.
Deal peoples..

My suggestion is take a Valuim b4 watching the video
Our team was deplorable today
In particular watch the NW delivery to the forwards today, it was as bad as you will ever see in a SANFL final
I reckon if our up field players tried to pass to the EG defenders , NW prob have taken more marks in the forward line ...

Tend to agree. We lost so many quality players this year, including 3 KEY midfielders. Out of all the losses, people underestimate how important Trotter was, that guy was a bull, he was a machine at the clearances, and he had good disposal.

All year we lacked forwards, even last year we did but we got enough goals thanks to our dominant midfield. This year we had the same forward line, but less midfielders, and once our best forward in Jericho went down, we really struggled to consistently kick winning scores (look at our results post the North game when he went down).

This year we seemed to lack continuity in our playing group, we were patching holes a lot during the second half of the year, and there were some puzzling selections (dropping Langford, not having Dawe in the ruck, having Rowe seemingly playing without a designated role ect). In the end we probably did well to make the PF. If we couldn’t get it done last year with an AMAZING team, 2011 was always going to be mighty tough. It proved too tough.

Will David Trotter be looking to come back to Norwood for 2012? Didn't he just take 12 months away from footy to travel overseas?

Clearly, many on here either didn't WATCH the game closely enough yesterday, or are just expressing 'sour grapes'.

1. Norwood's game plan (& I've been saying it since Bassett took over) is St. Kilda in disguise - the amount of times that NO player was in front of centre yesterday was down to bassett's tactics & was again (for the 3rd time this season) exposed - there are no penalty shoot outs in SANFL! - this is the reason for the 'dower' struggle & low scoring. Pay credit to Godden & the players for exposing it by denying Norwood the ball.

2. Give credit were it is due (cue No-Mercy after his comments 2 weeks ago), having spoken to a couple of players after the QF, they both said they took it too easy @ the start of the game & could never recover - the past 2 weeks the players have been outstanding in their attack on the ball & the body, a repeat next week will go along way to securing a flag!

3. Thompson destroyed Shenton in the 1st half, the backline was outstanding & once again Bassett failed to tag Macca (& didn't Geddes play well in the 2nd half, particularly after not being named - was that Godden's 'Plan B' that we've been asking for all year?? ;) )

4. All crowds have been disappointing in the Finals - more to do with the LOCATION than anything else IMHO. Once again, we were forced to stand in the 'little yellow box' rather than behind our family & friends.
When AAMI Stadium staff member was challenged (i.e. no-one behind us, these are our family/friends, it's not an AFL game, etc.) still played the 'nazi' & forced us to to stand in the little yellow box! Pathetic. No wonder nobody wants to attend when AFL rules are inforced @ SANFL games. Promoting Family Entertainment? Yeah, right!!

5. As has been the case for 21 seasons, our club has been 'paid out' for 'hybrids', being soft on merging, written off as 'pretenders', bagged for no supporters, etc. etc. Yet time & again, after being written off, the club & particular the players over the years have stood up & in an era of dominance(I would suggest unlikely to be seen again) be Centrals, OUR club has been the main opposition. I am very proud of our performances over the years ('04 GF & '06 2nd Semi excluded). Our record is better than many of us had ever expected after the merger. Well done to the admimistrators of the club over the years.

6. The flag is there to be won. I repeat, write us off @ your peril.

Go You Eagles!!!

Reddeer, I support my team and the SANFL as much as I possibly can. That's not that easy with a small family but nearly always do I watch the ABC on a Saturday afternoon.

My point being, that the standard is pretty ordinary and it's not helped by the coaching. If I had to point my finger at one aspect of the comp that could get better, it's the game plans of most clubs. These guys that play aren't full timers, so why try and implement game plans that are for full time players and require full time commitment in regard to fitness etc. It doesn't make sense. I'm afraid for the SANFL, because those types of games aren't going to bring crowds in.

Full credit to the Eagles yesterday and best of luck next week, but realistically the style of game the SANFL is producing isn't conducive to attracting people back to SANFL level.

And really isn't that what we want - an attractive game that people flock back to because they're jacked off with the AFL's over-officialdom?

Prelim Final Discussion

Postby The Sleeping Giant » Mon Oct 03, 2011 10:28 am

What was that about the winning team defending the standard of play? **** I'm a genius. ;)

On a serious note, I really fear for the competition. Yesterdays game was atrocious, along with every final played so far. Safe bet that this weeks GF crowd will be the lowest on record. Thank Christ Bathurst is on.

The sooner Bassett heads off to the AFL the better. Hopefully Godden follows him.
