My best one-day team

Postby Ruck Legend » Sun Jan 22, 2006 8:23 pm

Batting Order
1. Adam Gilchrist -
2. Phil Jaques - (Must be played ahead of Simon Katich)
3. Ricky Ponting
4. Damien Martyn
5. Andrew Symonds
6. Michael Clarke
7. Michael Hussey
8. Shane Watson (when he is fit return him to the side, have Hopes in for Watson when Watson is injured)
9. Brett Lee
10. Nathan Bracken
11. Glenn McGrath
12. Super Sub Cameron White (unless Warney returns)

Out: Simon Katich - just not up to standard
: Brad Hogg - getting on. White must be given a go.
: James Hopes - handy player would be in if Watson was injured like he currently is
: Stuart Clark - would be in if Lee, Bracken or McGrath got injuried.
: Brad Haddin - a ready made replacement for Gilchrist.
: Brett Dorey - only 2-3 years younger than Dizzy. Dizzy should still be ahead of this bloke.

Future possiblities - Mark Cosgrove, Dan Cullen, David Hussey, Michael Klinger, George Bailey, Adam Vogues.

I reckon Hussey would be wasted at 7. I'd say 5 or 6.

Gotta agree with that, despite all the hoohaa about White I am yet to see any reason why he should be in the side.
I think Cullen is the next spinner for Aus in all forms of the game but his batting must improve.
Tait was picked for the 1 dayers before getting injured but can he play in the same team as Lee in 1 dayers ? EIther going to bowl the opposition out very cheaply or go for plenty plus tait would lenghten the tail. Despite this I would put him in for Bracken.
Katich MUST go, a liability in the field, a disaster running between the wickets and his stats just don't justify retention.
I also think Martyn is on thin ice, surely its time to promote Hussey and Symonds up a spot or 2 and in his replacement hopefully they go for someone younger than 30.

yeh I dont rate Bracken much, he is probably only in the side because Tait is injured etc, but I guess thems the breaks
and they dont want to make too many more changes to the national team because they are waiting for some more new south welshmen to come through
please, you cannot tell me that 5 of the best 6 avail bowlers in aust come from NSW, McGrath, Lee, Bracken :?: Clark :?: and McGill

I am not sure why they are perservering with Martyn and even Katich, as they have publicly stated that they are looking to the 07 world cup which is still 2 years away, Marto will be 36 then

1. ?
2. Phil Jaques
3. Ricky Ponting
4. Michael Clarke
5. Michael Hussey
6. Brad Haddin
7. Andrew Symonds
8. Shane Watson
9. Brett Lee
10. Shaun Tait
11. Glenn McGrath
12. Super Sub: Get rid of ridiculous rule

Mark Cosgrove has to be introduced & given a chance, sooner rather than later. I've left Gilly out, as he needs to concentrate on Test Cricket, Katich doesn't get a guernsey, not sure who I'd give the other opening spot to though. This Super Sub rule is just stupid.

HAYDEN MATTY BLOODY HAYDEN FFS
Jaques
Ponting
Hussey
Clarke
Symonds
Gilchrist
Lee
Hogg/Warne
Gillespie
Bracken/Tait
McGrath
12. Agree with punkybrooster

Bye bye Marto. Dorey nowhere near it. Hopes, Gun Barrell Straight. Gilly into the middle, Haydos and Dizzy back. Bye bye Kat and Clark. Bracken not too bad last night if anybody actually bothered to watch him bowl. Haddin in for Gilly if Gilly would rather stay home. Tait next cab off the rank IF fit. Cosgrove into the squad and Travis Birt might also be worth a punt. White overrated. Wouldn't feed Edsel Watson.

Jaques
Hayden (good point REB)
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Symonds
Gilchrist (the one to move up the order if we are flying)
Hogg
Lee
Gillespie/Bracken
McGrath

Super sub is a load if shite.Unless you can name your sub after the toss it is pointless.Either that or just let teams play 12 men,and thats just not cricket.
Between now and the world cup, expect to see Gilchrist and McGrath to get "rotated" out of the side more often for the sake of lengthening their careers.

Publicly stating that certain players are going to be included that doesn't start for over a year has to be one of the biggest jokes of all time. If Katich, Dorey, Hopes, Clark and Martyn play in the world cup, we won't win it plain and simple.

Gilly's opening days are over. Give the guy a break, he's been busting his balls in the last couple of years and the burnout is becoming obvious. Haddin is a capable replacement when Gilly is rotated and Haydos and Jaques are capable openers in order to move Gilly back to seven. Like Booney said, we can always move him up the order when required.

The selectors are worried about father time catching up with our squad but how about trying something novel..PICKING THE BEST TEAM AVAILABLE. Matty Hayden can still destroy and international attack. As for Dizzy, he was given too many games when not in form and now he is coming back to form on home pitches he is watching TV while Dorey and Hopes go for 100 runs in a match.

Katich is really starting to get on my tits. You see, when he fails he is just another Wozzie lemon. Bring in Jaques the New South Welshman ha ha. And if you are going to play and old fart like Marto, you might as well BRING BACK THE BOOF. Why he has been 'retired' from one day cricket is mystery to me, especially when he can come on and bowl those hand grenades.

For what it is worth, here is my one-day side

1. Phil Jaques
2. Michael Clarke
3. Ricky Ponting
4. Mike Hussey
5. Andrew Symonds
6. Adam Gilchrist/Brad Haddin
7. Shane Watson
8. Brett Lee
9. Brad Hogg/Shane Warne
10. Nathan Bracken
11. Glenn McGrath

I think Clarke should open the one-day batting. He showed during the last VB series he is suited to play there.
Gilchrist to bat at 6, but promoted up the order should we get off to a good start. Haddin his replacement when rested.
Brad Hogg as spinner, but replaced by Warnie should he return to ODI's.
Hussey to bat number 4.

Agree with your team blink except I rate McGill ahead of Warne for the one-dayers when the opposition have to hit out - he is more likely to take a wicket. And I would play 2 spinners in Sydney - We've got the best spinners in the world at the moment =why not play them?
We used to be good :-(

Blink, can't say what the form of players will be like by the team the Cup rolls around but I think you've got the model right, 3-4 specialist bowlers, but about 6 options all up, with reasonable batting down to number 9.

Thanks CP! Who I selected is based on current form, and assuming no injuries. I think that if the super-sub rule is kept for the world cup, and un-altered, the selectors may want to go for yet another allrounder ie James Hopes/Cameron White/Brad Hogg (if Warnie plays)

How dare you suggest Cameron White be in the squad, and even more so suggest he is an all-rounder!
He bats ok and his bowling is *leans back and thwack!* over rated.

LMAO McGill ahead of Warne. McGill is less accurate and goes for more runs.

Players who performed

Postby Ruck Legend » Thu Jan 26, 2006 8:13 am

Jaques, Cosgrove and D Hussey all score hunderds.
White scored 85 and took 4 wickets.
Well done boys - these 4 are part of the future of Australian cricket

I think it would be interesting to see how the following team would do against the Australian team playing today (I believe none of these players are injured):

Hayden
Jacques
Ponting
Lehmann
Cosgrove
Watson
Haddin
Warne
Kasprowicz
Gillespie
Tait

I'm not suggesting that ALL of these players should be in the team, just that there isn't a lot of difference between the best 25 or so players.

It is disappointing though that none of the SA players (Lehmann, Cosgrove, Gillespie or Tait) and Ponting are playing today. Part of the reason why I'm not at the ground at the moment!

I can't believe all the hype over Shane Watson who is supposed to be the next big thing in Australian cricket. How anyone could include him in their best ODI side is strange considering he can't even stay fit. IMHO he is so over rated I've had a bet with a mate concerning his performances for Australia starting from Feb 2005 going through to Feb 2007. Australia is not that desperate for an all rounder like Flintoff or Kallis and Watson is not the answer. For the record the terms of the bet are;

Watson has to have played 11 test matches by Feb 2007 and have a batting average of 30 or over in both tests and ODI's. There is a carton of beer v a bottle riding on the outcome. Watson had already played one test at the time the bet was made so he needed to play 10 more. He's lucky that crap Super Test was played!!!!!
