He will be fine. All the greats debuted in the State League at Klemzig as 16 year olds. 7,s is social anyway so it will definitely be 8) .
Also it was discussed at the meeting at great length (the 7s season) and it is looking like there will be 8 or 10 teams this year with the comp running from Oct 26th until Dec 14th. should be a great season and serious manouvering is being done to introduce the Wednesday night happy hour ;) .

There is a bit of mail floating about that there is a couple of Western Ireland Mountain Goats who may be leaving the club and looking elsewhere

Na Fianna will unearth several new recruits under the new coaching regime. Recruiting the players is not even half the work though. Making sure they fit into our culture and club and can commit for the season is where a club will gain the most from any new players and ultimately achieve long term success 8) .

I look back to 2006/7 where i had the pleasure of coaching the Gowans brothers and wingnut Callinan for a game. They were super recruits whose talent spoke for themselves but realistically they were never gonna stick around long term. My point is...Big names in October dont necessarily translate into drinking from Betty Hannigans Cup on St. Patricks Day :drinkers:

That's a bit of a bombshell at the Goats...
I completely agree with the culture aspect. I believe our recruiting policy will have a pretty high success rate this year as we have gone after players that we believe will embrace the culture of the club. We've already taken some of those out on the town & there is at least one more 'bonding' session for the lads to get around prior to the start of the season! :partyman: :drinkers:

Port played in a trial v 'State' U18's last night. U18's are going to the national carnival this weekend I believe. How has SA gone in these carnivals traditionally? Half of the team from last night had never played before. There a couple of talented players, but not many.

The Mens team won their last title in 1983. Lost the Grand Final in 2003,2005 and 2008 to teams loaded with Irish visa players (dont get me started  )
The Women won their only title in 2008. They lost the GF in 2010.
The U/18s or Minors won the title in 2003, 2004 and 2005 in a Golden era for SA Gaelic Football IIRC ;) . I believe they called it a 3Peat 8)
All the records and photos can be accessed on the Gaelic website.
Good luck to all teams in Brisbane over the next week. IMO our best chance of us bringing home a National title at this years games is with the womens team led by Jason "New Revolution" Fay if he can mastermind a way to upset the highly fancied and visually stimulating WA womens team. "LETS GO SA"

I'm not sure if this post is an indirect stab at flinders but I can say that we as a club have been working extremely hard in the offseason recruiting new players and people to the club. Yes we have quite a few new highly skilled footballers from div 1 amateur clubs but we believe these guys are in for the long haul and comments like those made above will only strengthen their desire to stay at the club for the long haul.
We have also established a minors side in the sevens competition with 12 new junior players with the intention of developing them to play in our senior side in the coming years.
I look forward to the coming season....

Not really a stab at you, more a tip i have learnt over the last 20 odd years. The best idea anyone has had at Flinders is the young fellas in the 7 a side comp. Based on last year, that comp is the ideal trg ground to breed future stars and the young fellas WILL be protected by the referee. Na F will be putting their new and young players in that team mixed in with a couple of dinosaurs who just wanna have a kick and a catch for a laugh.

We will be having an over 35's dinosaur team also, but looking forward to seeing the development in the youngsters. From what I've seen a couple are ready for senior footy already...
Can see your point re the name players but we had jordy Erskine out last season that played almost every game and is fronting up again this season and he is a regular for port in the sanfl so hopefully the div 1 boys will follow suit

Playing the host state Queensland today at 3pm. The minors kick off now at 9am, and the girls play Western Australia at midday.

Will update the website www.gaelicfootballsa.com.au and this forum when possible.

Men seem to have a must win game against NSW tomorrow, with their last game against Victoria who looking at results are the team to beat

Sadly all SA teams have now been knocked out of the nationals with the girls losing their semi to WA today. Hopefully next year will bring better results!

Does now mean we can focus on the state league for season 2011/2012!

Anyone else care to have a dabble on a predicted ladder at the end of the minor round?

Neville Bartoss wrote:With soccer and footy seasons over for those not playing finals (me included in the category) our attention once again focuses on Gaelic to get us through summer....how are the respective sides looking? Recruits? Coaches? Predictions?

As per previous posts we have a reputation of promising the world and delivering nothing but we have explored a few different recruiting avenues to hopefully overcome our post Christmas blues.....

My predicted ladder at the end of the minor round
1. Onkas
2. Western ireland
3. Flinders
4. St brendans
5. Na Fianna
6. Port district
7. Irish
8. Mitcham

Disappointing trip results wise for the SA team at the Australasian Championships, but still a fun time had by all/most! IMHO was probably the strongest team ive played in during my 3 years playing at State level, but the all Irish teams we came up against (and absence of the usual New Zealand whipping boys) meant the plucky South Aussies were always going to be up against it.

Congrats to Jamie Conlon (Onkas) who won the NAB Rising Star aka the best Minors player at the championships. He follows on from Matt "Shane Woewodin" Whitford who won the Chazz Brownlow at last years games. Also congrats to Gabe Phillips (Onkas), Chris Carey (Mitcham), and Johny Pegoraro (St Brendans) who made the Australasian team from SA, and from the girls Anita Doecke, Zoe Tully, Kate Woodlands and Amber Cooper (I may be forgetting some others) who made it from the girls team.

Bring on the State League!
