What's your decision?

Postby Dying Swan » Sun Sep 25, 2011 5:56 pm

2011 (so far) - 47 reports that have had decisions (unknown number thrown out before that stage), including 2 coaches.
Guilty 29
Not guilty 18
2 pending reports from today – 1 surely will get thrown out before decision by the same umpire who has most reports thrown out.
2010 reports for entire year going to decision – 31 including 1 coach
Guilty 17
Not guilty 14
Why has there been a 52% increase in reports?
1. Softening up our game and doing an AFL sanitation process?
2. Incompetent umpiring – umpires who have no feeling for the game?
3. Poorly coached umpires?
4. More aggressive players?
5. More frustrated players (and coaches) owing to inconsistent umpiring and incomprehensible decisions?
6. All of the above?
How many reports have been thrown out before reaching a decision? Surely a record number too?

(3) is the glaring issue
daylight then follows to (maybe) (2)

I'd like to see better directed umpires before I fully determine their competence.

Very good post Swanny , and welcome to SAFOOTY
I agree with all of the above , except [4] more aggressive players
I must admit for the first time in about 20 years I stopped going to the footy
The last 2 months , I couldnt be bothered
Ive lost interest becoz of the over saturation of the game by umps and coaches
SANFL has become more AFLised,
SANFL had a unique product, but emulating the ASFLisms has turned me off
I will attend finals 2011
As for next season, Im undecided about renewing my membership
Might stay home just punt on the horses and catch the AFL games and ABC games on TV [like I have in recent times]and catch the occasional SANFL game for a day out

Thanks Mal, but I actually thought my first post was more reflective of where SANFL footy is going.

Both 3. and 5. are the culprits

The inconsistency of all 3 umpires has an effect on the game and results.

Do they actually try and set a pattern of decisions before the game or do they just let each other do their own interpretations of what they think the rule should be.

If its confusing for the spectators, then it must be doubly confusing for the players.

If the umpires are influenced by the call of the crowd for "BALL" then they have no idea.

My feeling are that if you do not umpire to the views of the umpires coach, (whether they be right or wrong)then you will be dropped from the panel until you change your ways, it often looks from the outside that an umpire cannot make a call when a pack forms until he has run at least 20 meters plus from the contest.

Time is right for a change in the head coach for umpires.
I wish my remembering was as good as my forgetting

Both interesting posts.
On Dying Swan's comment, I reckon all (apart form 4) are symptoms of point 1.

And, Mal, I too am losing interest in SANFL.
Probably the main reason for me (apart from the umpiring) is that the club I support have an unbelievable knack of shooting themselves in the foot. (but i'll leave that for another rant)
The uniqueness in the SANFL product has been eroded to the point of frustration.
The points Mals raised coupled with Centrals dominance in September, I have developed a pretty flippant attitude to a comp that Ive been passionate about for nearly 40 years.

I havent bothered attending any finals this season, and wont attend any.
If they were at Suburban grounds or even Adelaide oval, I may have.
Footy park has no atmosphere with the smaller crowds & is too much of a mission these days with little kids in tow etc.
Yeah, Naah,..... Bollocks!

Glenelg supporter? Yeah, don't blame you.
